  • I asked nicely...

So I had a great day at Disneyland yesterday but there was one point that put a little dent in the good time that I had. So my friends and I were waiting in line for the Matterhorn at about 7pm. Then this lady behind us lights up her cigarette. Well one of my friends has respiratory issues and when she smelled the smoke she told me that she'd have to move out of the line because the smell of the smoke would irritate her lungs. I offered to ask the lady to put her cigarette out. I approached the woman and said, "Excuse me? I'm sorry but my friend can't take cigarette smoke, it makes her lungs close up, so would you mind putting out your cigarette please?" She looked at me like I was crazy and I said, "It's just that, she can't breath well if there's cigarette smoke nearby." She wasn't happy about it but she put out her cigarette and then proceeded to talk to everyone around her about how some crazy girl made her put her cigarette out. I was only a few people away from her so I could hear everything that she said and I thought it was very rude but oh well.

After a few minutes she asked me, "Hey, if I let a few people cut in front of me, just to put space between us, can I smoke?" so I asked my friend if that would be acceptable and she responded with, "It's actually against California State Laws to smoke in line, and Disneyland is a non smoking park, there are designated smoking areas if you need to smoke." Then she pointed out the smoking area that is right next to part of the Autopia track and is across from the Matterhorn Queue. I admit that my friend could have been a bit more polite but....she was right. So the lady put some people in between us and lit up her cigarette. and she continued complaining about us to everyone else in line....yea, that's mature...

A few minutes after that, an announcement was made by a castmember that Disneyland is a non smoking park. She did the whole non smoking schpiel as other people in line cheered! then the lady gave my friend and I dirty looks. Hey....I asked nicely! And we weren't even the ones that went to the castmember, either someone else complained or the castmember smelled or saw it! What bothered me was how much this lady complained about us when she was the one who was breaking the rules!

    My best score ever!

I'm very glad that the announcement was made, that people cheered and that this loser was embarrassed. That was BEYOND inconsiderate of this lady. Appalling!

Good for you guys. You shouldn't suffer just because she wants to be a jerk.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

As a smoker, I would never do this. It is incredibly rude. They have designated areas and if you cannot wait a few minutes in line without one, then maybe you should not be in the park. I would have been much ruder and actually put her cigarette out.

I think you guys did the right thing. She was rude and inconsiderate.

Kudos to y'all for saying something.

Good job, you and your friends did the right thing. That lady sounded awful.

                Re: I asked nicely...

I would have went to the CM right away concerning the smoking issue and not have bothered the person smoking.

Even though you asked nicely, people look at you like you are from outer space.

Hooray for the CM for making the announcement!

                  Re: I asked nicely...

Kudos to you for sticking up for your friend! I think smoking around ANYONE who isn't a smoker is inconsiderate. I'm a bit hypersensitive to cigarrette smoke and a tad allergic and can't handle it at all. (I can smell this stuff five cars away at a stop light.) I do think, however, that most smokers nowadays are hip to the fact that most people in this state don't want to be breathing their smoke and are mindful of others around them. When people are clueless, as this particular lady who was ignoring the information on the guidemap and signage throughout the park, asking "nicely" might not cut it.

By the way...someone might want to start popping some corn as this is one of "those" topics.

                    Re: I asked nicely...

I make sure I have a current guide in my pocket folded and showing the no smoking rules and if anyone gets cranky with me when I ask them to put the cigarette out and they want to get noisy, I just say it's against the law and here is the printed notice and if you continue I will call a Cast Member to escort you to a smoking area. And I will too.

Situations like that are when Scuttle and his sea friends would come in handy! But I'm glad to hear that an announcement was made. Proof that somebody cares.

I was thinking the same thing with I first saw this. I'm glad to see however that everyone agrees that the lady with the cig was totally rude and and wrong for lighting up in line.

She must of been one of those nasty AP's.....

Stuff like that happens more than you realize. Not a shift goes by that I don't have to tell somebody to put their cigarette out. There are times that people are beligerent with other CMs about putting their cigarettes out (especially with female CMs), but they just come find me. Nobody really tries to be beligerent with a 6'4" 230 lbs canoe CM.

Excellent idea!!!!!!! I smoked for 26 yrs and quit 11 yrs ago! Yey for me!!!!!!!!! I love being able to breathe and taste food again. I CANNOT stand the smell of cigarettes anymore, not that it makes me crave them, it makes me physically ill. Hubby hates it even more than I do. He was the reason I quit. We have to move away from the smoke or tell them to put it out and I would have no trouble poiting out the rules to someone in a line!!!!! That is why there is a smoking area which we steer clear of. If we even catch a whiff of it, it makes us ill. As a smoker, I tried to be as polite as possible and not get my smoke in other peope's spaces, amost impossible to do if you are near people, This was long before all the laws which I believe are neccessary to protect the health of non-smokers, the majority of the people and especially children from the dangers of second hand smoke. Bravo for stepping up. She was an idiot and one of those who think the rules are for everyone else. What a jerk!!!!
                            Kudos to ya!

Watch out, you may get a few to light up just to get to talk to you!

Last trip, we watched an woman (mid to late 40s) in a power chair with an oxygen tank light up in NOS, then complain when they heard someone coughing saying "Bet they are going to come whining about my little bit of smoke."

I just shook my head, but after about a minute a HM CM asked her to put it out.
If you see a cute yellow lab puppy with a yellow cape, WAVE! It might be us! (Or it may be someone else that lurks here!) Thank you for asking before you pet! Next trip, Dec 22-Jan 3rd.
