  • Another Pressler-Era Lie?

When Tomorrowland '98 opened, the Imagineers responsible for the project said that they were very careful about placing the AstroOrbiter at the entrance. The height of the kinetic sculpture did not exceed the height of Sleeping Beauty Castle, and they said that the rocket attraction was situated as far back from Central Plaza as the castle is.

I happened to notice, however, in the following satellite image that the AstroOrbiter is considerably closer to Central Plaza than the castle is, so it's no wonder the tower overwhelms this part of Disneyland:

The scale of the AstroOrbiter is too big for Central Plaza. At the very least, removing the top sections of the sculpture would help prevent it from competing with the castle or with the entrances to the other realms.

    Amazing.

always something new to complain about.

(although, I agree that the orbiter is in the wrong place)

Would love to read the rest of the material this information was drawn from, thanks.

Didn't Walt purposely have the Rockets built back further in TL to pull you into the land? That's why the entrance was open to view. It didn't have stupid rocks blocking everything in TL!

The orbitor remains a huge mistake and the rocks are stupid, stupid, stupid.

            Oh...and the rocks are stupid.

Get rid of the french fries, put the rockets back where they belong and Tomorrowland will BEGIN to not look stupid.

            P.S. The rocks are stupid.

One story from the time was that Pressler argued the merchants view that you should put the attractive merchandise "up-front" as opposed to Walt's view that you draw people in with that metaphorical "weenie at the end of the street."

It was a catastrophic move. And can't be reversed soon enough.

Walt knew what he was doing, and the jets were transcendant in flight high above Disneyland - - in the stars, rather than at plaza level.

I can't believe you don't think the rocks are stupid.

                (I agree, very stupid rocks!)

Whats with those rocks anyway?? It blocks everything and becomes such a headache for crowd control. Do away with the rocks and let us look forward to tomorrow...

The funny thing is, Im sure a vast majority of Disney-goers don't care about the placement and stuff of tomorrowland....we're just super picky

I do agree TOmorrowland is stupid right now, but I'm sure a good majority of park visitors don't care/notice.

We need the Powers That Be to notice, that's what we need.
Maybe good ol Johnny notices and he'll do something to bring it back. I think he understands.
So any Powers That Be on these boards, hook it up. Bring back TL!

True, they may not notice. But if they were to see it the otehr way, I can guarantee you they would like it better.

I'm sure the "vast majority of Disney-goers" notice everytime they get caught in the bottleneck of crowds caught up in this area due to the placement of all this stuff

Everyday guests DO notice it's "not as good" or "something isn't right" - - but they don't always know why. Nor should they. It's Disney's job to do it right, not the job of a guest to plan it for them. It it's good audiences will like it better - - and maybe without ever knowing why.

It's a lie of neo-business that people know what they want - - that can only work to support an inward cycle of the familiar, the sequel, the remake, the templated. Not everyone can visualize something different.

Walt thought it was your job to know what they will want and give it to them.
