  • What is with the Wreath?

Haunted Mansion, when it doesn't have the days till Christmas Clock, it has the Funeral Wreath. I know it's for atmosphere but why do they put it? It seems so useless and silly to me. Why do we need it? Don't we like the plain mansion enough?

I think the Wreath is fitting. It goes with the theme of the mansion. IMO, I do not think Disney ever goes over board with the HM...

Yeah, agreed. Me likey the wreath. Though, I will say the mansion would be lovely without it -- I just think the wreath fits.

oh, please, there is NEVER too much themeing at DL!

        MORE MORE MORE!!!!!

Specifically, for the wreath on the HM, there is that
funeral coach setting right in front of the mansion,
and in olden days, sometimes "viewings occurred in
        the house of the relatives.

DL should only be given crap if there isn't enough
        details.

Hanging a funeral wreath from the house of the deceased was a very common practice in the Victorian era.

Well it's nice to see the wreath finally back. For the past couple years it's been either the countdown clock for Mansion Holiday or the 50th spider web. So finally it will be back to normal for a full 7 months!

Fortunately Disney isn't as random in its details as threads are on this site sometimes...

Antebellum Louisianians mourned the dead by staging elaborate funerals and processions, decorating graves at the time of death and on All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, placing black wreaths on doors and black ribbons on door pulls, and wearing clothes and jewelry that symbolized stages of mourning. Many customs incorporated Latin and African elements, a cultural heritage from Louisiana's colonial era.

                  c. 1866
                  Gift of Mariquita A. Wolfe
This mourning jewelry is composed in part of human hair. Hair jewelry could be made by the mourner or by artists who specialized in such work with hair clipped from the deceased at the time of death.

Not really. It's actually been part of the facade for quite a while.

"Useless and silly"? So I guess theming isn't important anymore? Well that's great for Imagineering I guess.

There's always going to be someone complaining, even when it's done right...

I like the wreath. It's historically and culturally accurate and adds a nice "dead" touch to the mansion.

You know... they usually can get those things fixed up quickly enough.
Unless... you don't think the 50th spiderweb/clock created a bad paint spot?
That would be too easy to paint over.

I think the wreath is creepy and cool.
A wreath on a house tells everyone that there's been a death that the inhabitants are dealing with. I think it's appropriate.
The question is, who put it there? The grounds keeper with the dog?

The wreath is not a new thing. It has been there before. I am sure people on the net have pictures of it.

next to the wreath used to hang black drapes as well. those have not been placed.

here is a picture of what it used to look like
