  • Old Making of Disneyland Film

Way back in the mid to late 1970's when Super 8mm Sound films were just about to be replaced by videotape as the mainstream medium for home movies and souvenir films...Disneyland released this Super 8 Sound film on the making of the Magic Kingdom: "Disneyland, From Dream to Reality"

I recall being rather excited when this was released because prior to it, there simply was no film or video that one could have at home about the building of Disneyland. And some of the footage in the film had never been seen by some of us before. I remember threading my Super 8 Sound projector many times, and screening this film for any of my unlucky friends or neighbors that happened by our house.

It was extremely well made and edited for its time, compared to most other souvenir films that looked pretty slapped together back then.

If you can get over the use of Florida's castle at the beginning and end (a very common error or "who cares" in all sorts of film and printed media in those days)...and can get past the somewhat annoying, "Do-do-do" background harmonizing...it's still a pretty good little film with some interesting vintage clips in it. I was thrilled to happen upon it on YouTube.

I think it would be fun to re-release this with the Steve Marting 50th film and perhaps a few other pieces that have been done on the building of Disneyland in the past, on DVD. It may look kinda lame today, but I think old films like this do a good job of capturing and conveying the "spirit" of the times they were made in.

Apologies if this had been posted before. I searched and couldn't find it.

wow, that's a great film, good find. That can't be from 1976 as listed since BTMR was made in 1979.

Thanks for sharing. I've seen some of HBVideos in the past.

Right. I didn't know the exact opening year of Big Thunder (I was thinking 1978) myself. But I didn't think that 1976 date was right either. I seem to recall this film was done for the (then) upcoming 25th Anniversary of Disneyland. But I can't confirm that myself until I come across my copy of the film and give the box a look-see.

Looking right now. I think I know where it is.

Never mind all that hard work! Google is my friend! You'll find the box near the top of this page:

            http://users.sisna.com/matkinson/Pages/1979.html

It's for the Silent 8mm version, but it's the same film and box. On the Sound versions they just stuck a sticker over that "Silent" bit that said "Sound." That was SOP on the Sound 8mm Films back then. And from the box back (and some text on the front) you can see that it was clearly made for Disneyland's 1980 25th Anniversary (though produced and released in 1979).
