  • Can someone explain how loading on Tower of Terror works?

I know how it works from a guest's point of view, because I've been on it several times. There are a few things that confuse me, though.

One, how does the same CM stay with the car? You unload in a different place than you load from, so I'm assuming he just takes the stairs, but I'm still curious as to exactly what he or she is doing while I'm on the ride.

I'm also curious about the single shaft design. I know it's one shaft as opposed to WDW's raise shaft and drop shaft, but beyond that, does more than one elevator car service every shaft? The cars move forward for loading / unloading, so it seems like while one is loading, the other could move "past" the first in the shaft and pick up more guests, speeding everything up.

If anybody knows about either, please let me know! Thanks!

      me too.

two elevators use one shaft, while one is loading/unloading, one is in the shaft.

You do come out where you started, but it doesn't seem that way due to how quickly you pass through the hall into the cars. Also as you're leaving the door to the loading area is closed off so it also makes it look a bit different.

And to the best of my knowledge you are correct on the loading procedures. 2 cars per shaft, 1 loads, and 1 is in the shaft. Hence the 2 level loading area.

As for what the CMs do in the meantime, they will handle the queue and wander back and forth through the hall to the queue through the doors next to the guest door. Some CMs will just freeze themselves in the same position till you get back. Others just seem to know where to stand to make it seem that way.

          ^ Correct.

You Load/Unload in the same place on DCA's tower. On Floridas you do not. There is no "Hallway" in Florida.

While one elevator is in load/unload the other one is in the shaft and vice-versa.

You unload at exactly the same place you boarded, either the lower platform or the upper platform. This allows two cars in each of the three towers. One is loading/unloading while the other is going through the drop sequence. The computer keeps them from getting in each others way. It's a complicated procedure but it seems to work. All the other new TOT's being built use the same design and drop methodology. May have a different story and effects in the preload, as does Tokyo's Disney Seas version, but the drop sequence is the same.

My daughter went to the park alone a few weeks ago. After getting on the elevator it backed up and then ... nothing. It just sat there. They sat for awhile and then were let out. Freaked her out to the point where this past Friday when we were there she would not go on the ride with me!

This MousePlanet article has a photo that shows the load area with the unload area behind it. Look at this picture. I believe MousePlanet also had a wonderful animation of how the whole thing operates.

Essentially there are two load/unload area, one above the other, each attached to one drop/show scene shaft. The vehicles move horizontally into them and go through the show while the other unloads and then loads.
