  • Opus Archives: Divers Of Disneyland

Another thread that mentioned the draining of the Rivers Of America, got me thinking this might be a good time to post a story on the SCUBA divers of Disneyland. So...from the Opus Archives and the December 8, 1989 issue of the "Disneyland Line" Cast newsletter....

Just another part of the "behind-the-scenes" magic at Disneyland, and the hard working Cast Members that most Guests never even give a thought.

I'm going to assume that virtually all the divers that will be working maintenance on the new Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage...are going to have to go through significant training, if they haven't already begun to.

It wouldn't surprise me if they have all been let go during the years the Sub Voyage was out of commission. Let's hope Paul Pressler didn't let all the talent swim away.

That's crazy. I don't know if I could swim in the sub lagoon. It would creep me out. (Or if I was Canadian it would creep me oot. )

Awesome article!! Really makes you think how much work really goes into keeping the park running.

i think you would get used to it. I thought diving on a wreck would freak me out. The small wrecks didn't, but the battle ship did when I saw the propellers. I got over it though....pretty fast. I admit I only looked at the propellers once and then continued swimming forward. ... If you had to dive in the lagoon everyday you would get used to it..

Opus1 - I share your love for Disneyland history. I sure do wish I had kept some of my copies of "The Line" - who knew, to coin a popular phrase of the moment.

Hope to have the honor to see you one of these fine days.

                    Great article!

We just saw a diver w/tanks last week! He was loading his stuff on a cart near the doorway under the Monorail station. We looked right past him to check out the other stuff.

I should have taken a pic!

I don't think we have trained divers on the premises anymore, because whenever we have to get divers at Jungle, they have to be brought in from Long Beach or something. With Nemo reopening, maybe they'll change that.

They'll probably have to. But it was my understanding that a couple of regular Facilities Cast were SCUBA certified and equipped, even after subs were gone. They may not be called into action first though, and indeed Disneyland might have outsourced some SCUBA tasks. But I think there's enough specialized equipment and show elements underwater even without subs...that would require Disney to have their own specially trained divers available. It could be that they are simply not dedicated divers anymore, and have mainly dry jobs.

But I would think with Nemo coming...they'd have to ramp back up to some degree.
