The Worst Employees at Disneyland

  • The Worst Employees at Disneyland

    Once upon a time when I was in Theme Park Operations, I made an observation that, no matter what the department or the role, the worst Disneyland employees are almost uniformly those who had previously worked for an amusement park of some sort.

    In my experience, they seemed to approach Disneyland as if it was just one of several similar establishments, and this phenomenon led to a general lack of understanding about Disneyland's particular culture and business methods.

    This observation probably deserves more investigation within the organization, as well as more attention from the casting department.

    For those of you who are or have been in Disney's organization, have you had similar experiences?

    I have never worked for disney but I have worked in the casino industry. There are many of the same factors at play in both. Fist and formost you get what you pay for. When you get to chose the cream of the crop you can worry about the show and how it use to be and how it should be. With the low wages and bad working conditions that I have heard about you get some bad employees.

    In my experience, they seemed to approach Disneyland as if it was just one of several similar establishments.     This is so true it is just another job, this is where you get what you pay for comes into play.

    In no means do I want to imply that all CM's are like this, The fact is most cast members i have met are so nice and helpfull. It helps make my vacation all the better

      There is something to be said for having experience in the theme park industry before coming to Disney, but I agree that if that experience is coupled with an attitude of "Disney is the same as the rest" this could be a problem.

      Every business has its own little quirks and policies for running things "their way" but Disney even more so, or at least they did. I wouldn't go so far as saying those who come in with the "this is the same as the last place I worked" are the "worst" employees, I would prefer to take that on an individual bases rather than group them all together as the "worst."

      I do agree that the situation is one that needs study and perhaps new hires with "industry experience" should get a special training course. We do that with new hires to my department that lateral in from others. We let them know their experience is a good thing BUT here's how we do things here and expect it to be done this way, not the way you used to do it for them.

        Remember, though, Pressler, Harris, et al, had no prior experience in a theme park, and they had this attitude in spades.

          Despite all the rumblings that cast members suck now and that Disney is attracting the worst of the worst, I still have not had many bad experiences with cast members. Perhaps you set expections way too high for the guy who is supposed to check your lap bar or serve you your hot dog. I'm more concerned with the cast members at TDA and Burbank, not the frontline folks, who tend to work way harder than the suits at times.

          Even if they paid 30 dollars an hour and required a masters to work in the park, I doubt you'd experience much of a difference. You could always get a job there and show us how it's done.

            I used to work for Knotts. I love the guest interaction! Its soo fun!

                There are always going to be employees that are better than average and others that are worse than average.

                My observation is that there is a correlation between those that are worse, according to my subjective bases of evaluation, and prior work, and sometimes, professional, experience at amusement parks.

                When Walt Disney was planning Disneyland, he researched amusement parks and similar attractions and learned more about what not to do than what to do. Importing the cultures of some of these other enterprises into Disneyland is a bad idea. A premium should probably be placed on people who are entering the organization fresh, receptive, and unencumbered by bad habits.

                  I agree with the others, despite your claim of "subjective evaluation" you are still over generalizing. Perhaps when you worked there your expectations were set too high.

                  I have noticed based on other posts in other threads Prag that you tend to put certain Walt theories and past doctrines on a very high alter and expect others to swallow them unfailingly and unthinkingly like you do...I don't think that is a realistic expectation.

                  As i said, it does happen in every industry. People learn to do it one way and SOME just can't change their ways due to inability or ego. I still think it is incorrect and over general to claim THEY (those who worked elsewhere as a total group) are the "worst" employees.

                  The worst employees at DLR are the ones who behave in a way that it negatively affects a guests enjoyment of the resort. I have no doubt that those employees include, but are sure not limited to or even make a majority, those who have worked at other parks.

                      It takes cajones to start a thread on MiceChat about the WORST CMs. I'm ducking, don't want to get hit by any tomatoes!

                      I'm sure if you said "Who are the best CMs" it would get intense too. Is there some sort of pecking order at Disneyland?

                        OK why didn't you call them CAST MEMBERS? Is this like a certain "square area of -land" terminology you used on us before? Don't you use Disneyspeak?

                          Incidentally, just because a person may be ill-suited to a particular job with a particular employer does not mean that he or she is a bad person or a bad employee, in general. So, I hope we can keep our collective knickers from getting in a bunch.

                            All Disneyland cast members are Disney employees, but not all Disney employees are cast members.

                            "Cast member" is not a euphemism for "employee", nor is the phrase a part of some special lexicon. The term refers to performers on a stage.

                              I used to work at another theme park (a really bad one) and I eventually became a lead in Attractions at DL.
