  • Good ideas, Just Badly executed!

A look at Paradise Pier shows at first hand a baddly planned land. But a closer look shows that they were all good ideas, just badly executed.

Orange Stinger-Based as a tribute to the growing orange business in California.

Golden Zepher- Based as a tribute to the growing tradition of Aviation in California.

Caurosel and Jumpin Jellyfish- Based as a tribute to the unique marine mammals, wildlife, and beauty of the Pacific Ocean.

Mullholland Madness- Based as a tribute to Mullholland Drive and Hollywood.

Maliboomer/California Screamin/Sideshow Games- Based as a tribute to the Boardwalks of California with Maliboomer resembling one popular sideshow game, as well as Screamin and Sideshow games being a little more to the point.

Sun Wheel-Crafted as a tribute to the Golden Sun that is often put together with California.

The whole ideas weren't exactly bad, they were just cut short of funding and cheeply done. But looking at the background, they all had potential!

I agree with you. Very cheap tributes. I think really the problem is layout. DCA is a very oddly shaped park. I think if they were to build it, they should have done something involving the timon parking lot as well. If they don't own it, fix that. At least KNOW how far DCA can possibly go, and then take the time to fill it in.

Another thing is that Disneyland's perimeters are closer in. They built a smaller park but allowed the area outside of the berm for a lot of their big attractions. DCA kinda built everything right up to the edge. Any big attraction woulud take up space within the park rather than out.

DCA as a whole is a good example of bad execution... many of which was also a bad idea as well.

I agree. All in all, I enjoyed Paradise Pier and the Grizzly River Run of DCA above all else in the park.

And there should be a train running around the entire park so you can go from one spot to another easily. Or a freeway with autopia cars, or something. Yeah, little cars on an omnimover or People Mover type track, and you can get on and off at the front, and by Tower of Terror, and by California Screamin' and by the Grand Californian entrance.

It's got the same basic shape as EPCOT, if you think about it...

Orange Stinger-Based as a tribute to the growing orange business in California. An off-the-shelf ride with an "Orange" theme.

Golden Zepher- Based as a tribute to the growing tradition of Aviation in California. Just a BIT of a stretch there, don't you think? It was meant to look "Generic", and it does... - and if it is there to "Glamorize the Aviation Industry", why is it not over in Condor Flats with "Soarin' Over California" - the only original, Imagineered attraction for the DCA Park?

Caurosel (sic) A carousel themed to "Little Mermaid" - completely out of place in Paradise Pier and Jumpin Jellyfish an import from the Tokyo DisneySeas Theme Park - also completely out of place in Paradise Pier (even having these two attractions within Waving Distance of each other would have formed the basis of a small "Little Mermaid" themed children's area... Bad Placement, Poor Theming, lack of orignal ideas...) Based as a tribute to the unique marine mammals, wildlife, and beauty of the Pacific Ocean (nice try)

Mullholland Madness- Based as a tribute to Mullholland Drive and Hollywood. A generic carnival attraction with a "car" theme - only the NAME gives it a connection to California

Maliboomer (generic carnival attraction) / California Screamin (sub-contracted roller coaster) /Sideshow Games (representative of every other carnival / traveling circus / sideshow in this country - not just "California") - Based as a tribute to the Boardwalks of California with Maliboomer resembling one popular sideshow game, as well as Screamin (a roller coaster "themed" to be in an amusement park? it's like saying that the "theme" of Mickey & Friends Parking Garage is "Concrete"...) and Sideshow games being a little more to the point; Paradise Pier is an attempt to conjur up memories of the old Pike amusement Park in Long Beach - the type of "park" that Walt hated (and didn't want to spend the day there with his children - the reason that he built Disneyland in the first place...)

Sun Wheel-Crafted as a tribute to the Golden Sun that is often put together with California a copy of the East Coast (Coney Island?) ferris wheel - where I believe they also see the "sun" at least a couple of days out of the year...

The whole ideas weren't exactly bad, they were just cut short of funding and cheeply done. But looking at the background, they all had potential!
(so did "Japanese Deer Park", "Marineland", "the Alligator Farm", "the Pike", "Santa Claus Christmas Village", "Busch Gardens", "MovieLand Wax Museum", etc. - they ALL had "potential", but Disney was always able to do it better than everybody else, and with style and flair...
Disneyland's California Adventure could be built anywhere, by anybody - and it would still not be a "Destination Theme Park")

Re: Good ideas, Just Badly executed!

I don't think the Imagine-nots who designed the park ever took a look at any of the California boardwalk parks they tried to evoke the feeling of - past or present.

Sun Wheel's about the only thing they got right - a great modern version of the Wonder Wheel (granted, that's at an East Coast seaside park).

Not sure if you meant it this way or not, but you started with a direct Walt quote about the park. "...and it should be surrounded by a train"

I wasn't aware of the quote, but I was, of course, applying the idea from Disneyland.

Personally, I think Paradise Pier is the most beautiful part of both Disney parks so I can't be too down on it. I'm pretty happy with how most of it turned out. Initially, I was harder on it, but it definitely wore on me.

The weakest part of it (to me) is the Golden Zepher. It's a pretty short, uneventful ride and it can only run when it's not breezy.

I think Screamin', The Sun Wheel, The Orange Stinger, The Maliboomer, and Mulholland Madness are worthy attractions for that area. Theme-wise, I'm OK with them as well. Actually, the first three rides I mentioned make for great eye-candy when taking in the area from afar. And at night, man, that area is just breathtaking to me.

i love hollywood backlot, i love paradise peir

i feel those were done well (even though people say the peir is cheap because they have carnival-type rides) but thats the point

i would say that the golden state area is disappointing. They could have done a much better job making it feel like a wooded, nature, wildlife, forest area. It feels more like ... knotts berry farm or magic mountain in that area.

and we know how everyone feels about bugs land..... good idea but geeeez.
This chamber has no windows and no doors!!!! ....better take the stairs.

Paradise Pier Is THE crappiest designed,
LEAST imaginative area of ANY Disney park
in the World! Part Eyesores that represent
Route 66 (Dinosaur Sunglass shop and Orange
Stinger), part off the shelf crappy county
fair rides (Mulholland Madness and Maliboomer),
part rides without any attempt to look like anything
but what they already are (California Screamin' and
Sun Wheel). Then scatter a Little Mermaid theme
sporadically with Jumpin' Jellyfish, King Triton Carousel,
Then add the Carney Games, which should NEVER have
any place in Any Disney park, a strange carney theme
with the shops under the coaster. Big Lagoon with
absolutely NO attraction planned for that body of water,
and absolutely no show infastructure or viewing planned
for in the useless water puddle. Mixed up all together
in an incoherent way. The whole "Paradise Pier" theme
is such an ASTOUNDING HORRIBLE LAMEBRAINED idea, it
should have NEVER even been part of ANY part of what
went in to the old DL parking lot!!!!!

It's not just the execution! (which was deplorable)
BUT also, the idea of an oceanside Carney is putrid.
It manages to make the entire place look just like any
other rollercoaster dominated place ~ a rollercoaster
dominates Knott's and 6 Flags view from outside. Why
the HECK would DISNEY want to emulate ANYTHING
like that? It cheapens the entire look of the park, gives
the wrong idea of what Disney represents, and has done
for years! Compare that to the Matterhorn ~ so much
more intriguing, and an icon of DL for nearly 50 years ~
Disney wanted a coaster that was an entirely different
experience ~ not to make it look like iconic eyesores that
can be see at ANY carney!!!!!!! People go to Disney
because they WANT that something extra, that Disney
had always previously provided, That something more
Disney does with their attractions, to make it a Something
completely different. PARADISE PIER is THE worst thing
that EVER Happened to a Disney Park, in execution, in
theme, in judgement by the executives who approved it,
in utilization of it's facilities. Paradise Pier is an INSULT
by Disney to it's Guests. Paradise Pier is dumbed down to
the lowest possible level in every way imaginable.

If they would have stuck to a Little Mermaid underwater
theme, that would have been interesting. An Attraction
that takes you through King Triton's Castle ~ and yes,
you could still have a beach theme with it . Look at what
Tokoyo Disney Sea was doing AT THE EXACT SAME TIME
with the Little Mermaid!!!! THIS would have been a much
better theme for the entire area!! DONT make a coaster
                              look like a COASTER!!!! UUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

They could have and SHOULD HAVE done SO MUCH BETTER
than an oridinary looking coaster, disguised as an oridinary
coaster, in an area themed to look like 6Flags/Knott's!!
PP is Eisners and Presslers big piece of dooo-dooo that
exemplifies their reign of terror and marks their spot on
