  • Why can't they keep Space Mountain clean?

    Here's Space Mountain:

Its bright white exterior has always been marred by a dirty dingy look. Even a good rain storm can't wash away the filth. It just sort of spreads it around and makes it worse. I always figured that's just the way it had to be.

But then I saw Tokyo Disneyland's Space Mountain.

What? A clean Space Mountain? What is going on here? Is there actually a way to clean Space Mountain's exterior or does the TDL version somehow magically repell dirt? I couldn't believe it when I saw it myself. What in the world is going on here?

i don't know how the air quality is in Tokyo, but the lesser air quality in Anaheim is probably a major contributor to the dingy look
      Is this haunted signature
      actually

yeah it's gotta be some sort of new paint , looks to be a different texture than the Anaheim version. Plus the "SPIRES" on the Anaheim version seem to be a different color all together

I think it may have to do with the paint or the materials used to build it... they may be slicker and therefore dirt can slide off.... that's my guess...

It's like teeth! The rougher the surface, more sticks to it and it is ultimately harder to get clean!

Remember... ours was built 30 years ago so the materials used were probably much different.

          (I do agree it's ugly!!)

It's a major city so pollution will be a problem. However TDR is right on the ocean and very windy so maybe it blows the pollution away.

Regardless, what keeps DL from cleaning Space Mountain? Is it physically impossible or is there a way to do it? Has it ever been done?

I'm sure it could be done but I can't imagine it's a huge priority. It's a pretty awkward shape for traditional cleaning too.

I've seen workers up on the 'slopes' of Space Mountain so it is cleanable. There's no reason for it to look dirty like that regardless of when it was built or what it was painted with. If TDA budgeted for cleaning, it would be clean.

All you have to do is stand up there with a powerwasher and blast the dirt away. If it works on my driveway it would work on space. Its not that hard. I'd love to powerwash Space Mountain for free (mainly because I love my powerwasher haha).

Its not a priority to clean it up only becuase the Disney NUTZ are the only ones that spotted it. =)

maybe they should just install paint waterfalls.

I believe the problem is cultural. Not to offend anyone, but there is a different work ethic in Japan. Regular washing of show buildings is probably part of a weekly/monthly checklist.

In Tokyo, they probably clean the darn thing at least once a week, if not daily. DLR only hoses that thing off MAYBE twice a year. I've seen em do it, it looks like kind of a chore. Giant squeegees and hoses.

Back when Walt was alive, Space Mountain was repainted every night.
