  • Did the pieces of eight store inspire the movie?

In POTC 3, the coins are called Pieces of eight. Now, I know it's a common term, but was it more specifically inspired from the store next to POTC with the same name? Or is it just coincidence that they both are called Pieces of Eight?

Pieces of Eight is and always was a Spanish Dollar back in the olden days.
I'm guessing Walt thought it was the perfect to name that as his pirates store.

So no matter how you look at it, Pieces of Eight is indeed a common term. I don't think there were any inspirations. Thats just what it is. A currency.

Coins were regularly cut up to make smaller denominations. Eight pieces was standard. So you paid small bills with 'pieces of eight'. Coins just don't go as far these days

I guess I just thought it was funny that the POTC store had the same name., even though it's a very common term.

just search it in wikipedia or even google images and coins pop up. Plus if you haven't noticed the ride inspired the movie and the store was tied to the ride. Just a simple answer

It's sort of like the Pirate version of a "Dollar Store."

Except Disney's definition of a dollar is 3 dollars more.

Yeah, pieces of eight were just the actual currency that was used. The writers of the film were just being accurate.

An interesting tidbit, though...the old parrot that used to be at the PotC entrance would sqwak, "Pieces of eight!" every now and then. Some have argued that this was subtle encouragement to enter the Pieces of Eight store on your way out of the attraction.

But more likely a nod to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island", in which Long John Silver's parrot, Cap'n Flint, says (repeatedly) "Pieces of Eight"

Just to add to the consensus . . . to be succinct, no.

I think the Pieces of Eight term is just because of the common name for it. However, they did receive other inspiration from the Pieces of Eight shop. Look to the ceiling for the monkey on the lamp, which inspired the inclusion of the actual monkey that appears in the movies. I also get the feeling that it inspired other areas of the films.

I believe the monkey lamp came after the refurbs that were done to include movie additions...

I believe the Pineapple Queen's got it right on the refurb additions.
