  • Would Light Magic work today?

Someone mentioned Light Magic as a reference in a different thread and it got me thinking about this. Light Magic had a lot going against it. It was following in the footsteps of probably the most popular parade in the history of the park (Electrical Parade... one of the few things that draws a crowd to DCA). It was one of the first parades to have show stops. And it had new technology, fiber optics. Let's not forget that it actually broke down during it's premier... not a good start. Also had a confusing theme at best and a complete lack of theme at worst.

For the lucky few that camped out at a show stop it was BEAUTIFUL... in between stops it was completely dark and pointless with weird music... also never really understood the theme. These days just about every parade has a show stop so people have gotten used to being at specific points to see their favorite float. They would still need to have lights in between stops (one of the early failures) and they need better music and a better story. I'm wondering what other people think.

I think it would work today. They just need to make it less "girly" and make it for everyone. Keep the original music because it is beautifully written.

From what I hear, the fiber-opticts are still up on mainstreet. They have just been painted over lol.

Re: Would Light Magic work today?

never. Keep that streetacular in it's krypt.

The show had way too many problems.
(All the floats the same, the fiber optic lighting
on the floats didn't show off well, the viewing
screen for the film portion was not visible to the
majority of the people viewing the performance.
the show performance area was much smaller
than for any other DL parade that had show stops,
(there were only 4 identicle units), which also meant
that the number of people able to view the show was
also much more limitied than a typical parade, the show
lacked the variety of floats a typical parade had, the
show didn't have that next generation of float lighting
that was and is expected of a successor to the MSEP,
nor did even have the lighting that WDW had with
Spectromagic, it didn't incorporate floats for different
        animated movies.)

Now, with the MSEP apparantely permanently bequeathed
to DCA, for purposes of driving attendance, it is really sad
that DL doesn't have a night time parade in it's future. And
what is even sadder, is that the portion of the MSEP that
DCA currently has is a smaller version than what DL had in
the MSEP final season, And that there has NOT been an update
to the lighting effects NOR an update to this desperately
neglected parade is over 20 years!

What they need to do is update the floats for the MSEP,
similar to what they did for the princess floats in Fantasmic.
Keep the same stylized music, but add a jungle scene for
Lion King, Jungle Book, Tarzan, then add an under water
section for Ariel, and add similar Hercules floats for what
they had in NY city. They can get riden of the Train segment,
But PLEASE replace missing Snow White Float!
Critter Country's a mess ev'r since the Country Bears were kicked out. Ya can't cover pooh with honey and 'spect people ta like it.

this is the kind of stuff that makes me very angry! especially negative feedback from people that are entitled to their own opinion! Light Magic has its fans and it's haters but what people do not understand was that the people who created Light Magic tried very hard to create something magical for kids and parents alike who would like to see something new instead of the same christmas lights on floats (electrcial parade). But instead from the very beginning people never gave it a chance! Especially the "annual passholders" they are one reason that this parade/streetshow never got a chance to make it at Disneyland park. Instead of people keeping their opinions to themselves they went to city hall and demanded their money back and saying how the show sucked. People overlooked the show and didn't understand the story of why the pixies or why the characters were in their pajamas. They just thought "oh my god! what the hell is this?" its not my beloved electrical parade"! "we must go to city hall and complain!, maybe they will stop this madness before it spreads!. And so, to shut all of these people up the decided to pull the plug on it. They knew that it was doomed once they heard all of the madness and stories people were talking about they called it "Light Tragic" and "disneys million dollar dud" and thus forth killing this thing that it disappeared as like it never existed. Now come to present day no one likes to talk about this "streetacular" because of its mixed reactions. The creative people behined it like Bruce Healey, Steven Davision, Vin Riely, & John Addis just said well we tried but it failed ok lets just forget we ever created this thing!. Can you imagine how heartbroken they must have been!. But no one one cares right? Well in my "opinion" i saw this as a kid and for me, it was very magical!. I loved the fiber optics, the pixies, and the music, i remember dancing with one of the pixies and saying to myself "omg this is wonderful"! I think if Light Magic were to premire now it would have done fantastic! Especially, with the Disney Faries"! Now would be the perfect time to incoporate tinks friends and the disney characters. But they should have tooken out the show stop and make it more of a parade, so that people could see it all. Oh well, maybe one day we'll see something like this again at DCA or Disneyland only time will tell, we haven't had a nightime parade at Disneyland since 1998's Mulan parade!!!!

Light Magic simply didn't work because it had no substance. Dancing pixies, that was it. If they changed the theme, the story, the music - it wouldn't be the same show. To answer your question, I doubt Light Magic would work today, but a new nighttime parade with fiber-optics, show stops, video sequences and the like probably could - just so long as they kept the dancing to a minimum.

The bigger issue though, is that Disneyland just simply doesn't need a nighttime parade anymore. With the pyro shows being all centered on Main Street - there's just no way they could handle the huge crush of crowds that a parade would bring to the same area AND a nightly firework show. As it is now, immediately after the 6:30 parade passes Main Street, people start finding spots for the 9:25 fireworks. Crazy.

Unless they were willing to scale down the firework show, into something that provided the same show all over the park like the old shows, I don't really see any need for a nightly parade.

                  AMEN!!!!!

I loved this show when I was little and I would beg my dad for us to watch it.

He loved it. I LOVED it. It was a very fun parade and show.

Although I never saw the parade itself I can say that I do love the music. When I bought the album that contained this song a few years back I fell in love right away. Not only did it have a nice, catchy Disney feel to it the song also included one of my favorite instrumental pieces of all time - "Rodeo" by Aaron Copland!

Maybe someday I'll be able to see a video of the show in full. I've looked on YouTube and can only find clips, not a full length version. (Well, for all I know that may be the full length version. LOL)

                      yea i agree.

I always thought though if DCA gets it act together and doesnt rely on DISNEYLANDS MAIN STREET electrical parade then the parade can go back to main street.

Yeah, each time I see the parade it always looks odd just seeing the words "Disney's Electrical Parade" on the train instead of the full "Main Street Electrical Parade." Not to mention the whole Sylvania thing is kind of tacky in my opinion. Yeah, it's great a company is sponsoring it, but really, does the company name need to be plastered on one of the floats?!

Light Magic, while having some cute idea, never worked and would not work today. Better to start from scratch and try something else. You can use an idea or two from Light Magic, such as fiber optics on things.

Wow... didn't really expect a response like this... ok couple quick questions

#1 if the MSEP is still around, which obviously I know it is, then what is in the box that says "Genuine MSEP light bulb" that my Mom paid $25 for because it was advertised and sold as MSEP is being dismantled?

#2 How long can the pyro go on? Looks great, expensive as *** (that was me btw) and we all know how much Disney loves to spend money... so knowing that they will eventually have to cut back on the bang bang and the dragon and Mickey can't dance forever why wouldn't there be another parade in the works? That to me is common sense.

I am not too keen on doing away with the train, that is the classic opening and I don't think it would be the same without it. Likewise I am not sure about adding floats to it. The formula up to Fantasia 2000 was to release a good animated feature, then release a parade of floats themed after it. After Fantasia 2000 they just sort of gave up. They just re-shuffled the floats like a giant Ipod. They don't just need a new night parade.... they flat out NEED a new parade period. I love the 50th parade, I DON'T WANT TO WATCH IT FOR ANOTHER 5 YEARS.
