  • Disneyland Characters In The Park

Do you think the characters faces will ever be animated?
And, if they could be animated, would you want them to be? It might freak out some little kids, and adults, depending on how good they do it.
Is the technology there to make a mask that size show all types of emotion and expression?

I thought I remember reading they were trying this on Mickey and Minnie somewhere.

Just wondering what you all thought.....

Are they really? Maybe that's where I heard it. I thought there would be more talk or video out there about those but I haven't seen or heard much.
I can imagine it being really weird looking!

Yeah, I believe in one of the parks (I can't remember which) they had characters in one of the stage shows that could blink and move theirs mouths. I saw a youtube video of it, and it freaked me out! But once I watched for a few more minutes, I got used to it. It actually added a lot to the stage show.

But I don't think it'll ever happen for atmosphere characters. There's no point in having them blink or anything if they can't talk, and having them talk would require far too difficult casting.

If we ever get a stage show back at the parks, I hope we'll get to experience the mouth-moving and blinking characters

There I was somewhere West of Tomorrowland
Flying through the stars just like
        Peter Pan
I said...Dang this looks too good to be true...

It's a nice day when you wake up in

I was hoping Tigger could make a snarling face during the next time he beats the hell out of a guest.

In the 'Dream Along with Mickey" castle show at WDW, Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy all have articulated heads with moving mouths and blinking eyes.

I think they look really awesome and add a lot of life to the characters. I would absolutely love to see the technology used on meet and greet characters, although because they have such unique voices, they still will probably never be able to talk. Although, there's no reason why they couldn't at least blink/wink.

The animated heads are still working the bugs out. They are extremely forward heavy and were heating up very fast. When the time comes, WDW will put those heads in Fant! and parades but not for greetings. I don't know if they will be headed out to DL.

Maybe as early as the next Christmas show in 2008.

Do they have a big bottle of Visine backstage? They should at least allow the characters to blink! That would be cool.
Or just have their mouths do that "Oooohhhh" expression, a sad face, a surprised face, a wink. Those could be use for meets.
I agree though, it probably won't happen for meet characters in the park.

I would hate for my daughters to be talking to Minnie while she gets a twitch in her eye and her upper jaw starts trembling......

Re: Disneyland Characters In The Park

Due to the cost, special training and maintenance on the animatronic heads they most definately will not be used for greetings.

Only for the "Dream Along With Mickey" stage show. The regular meet & greet characters have the usual static heads.

Yeah, for stage shows, parades, etc. it's a good thing...but not for meet n greets...that would look a tad creepy (esp. for kids, heh)

And yes, it is expensive to get the servos/equipment they use to make their faces more "animated"...

I can totally see why it's not practically feasible to use the heads for M&G, but I still love them, so I hope they use the opportunity to integrate the tech into future shows. And I also really really hope that they do bring it out to DL sometime in the future. At the moment, they really don't have a show they could use it in for full effect, since Fant! has a very tiny speaking part for Mickey and there is no castle show. But now that it exists, my best-case scenario would be a new show in, say, Fantasyland Theatre starring Mickey & co. using the articulated heads.

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if Tokyo Disney was the next park to try out the new heads. Their shows seem to be well-built for it, from the ones I've heard about.

I just found it on youtube, and it is kind of freaky but cool:

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.
