  • Lost PotC Effect?

I remember when I was very small riding PotC and seeing an effect that is not there anymore. In the grotto, the ship's wheel skeleton would look like a man steering the ship and only when lightning flashed would he be revealed as a skeleton. Was that effect actually there, accomplished by a painted scrim or similar effect, or is my memory playing tricks on me?

I've never seen anything of the sort, though all of my experiences on POTC are limited to the last fifteen years or so. I doubt such an effect was ever used, since I've never heard or read about it and it's not shown in the 60s footage of the ride in "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color." The thing about using a scrim for such an effect is that it would look totally 2D and unconvincing. There's no room for Pepper's Ghost, either.

But man, wouldn't that have been cool! If it were implemented with Pepper's Ghost, I mean. Have a real sailor animatronic steering the ship, with a matching skeleton animatronic hidden in a totally black area nearby. Put glass between them. Every time lightning flashes in the background, turn off the lights on the sailor and turn on the lights on the skeleton. The effect would be convincing--the reflected skeleton wouldn't appear transparent, since it would be superimposed on the black silhouette of the sailor, which would be blocking out the background.

That's actually a brilliant idea in general, with the Pepper's Ghost idea. They could *still* use that effect in the futuer to plus the ride in various scenes.

I'm a cradle Disneylander here for almost 39 years. That never happened. Sorry. But it sounds cool.

That would be an amazing effect, I remember Disneyland being very different when I was little, I don't know what it is.

If there was never a Man then it was possibly a Woman, if not a Woman then a really big Baby, otherwise where did the skeleton come from?

Okay, so my memory was playing tricks on me. Probably my childhood making things out to be bigger than they really are. Thanks, folks.

Thematically I don't think it would fit either since that particular area of the ride is supposed to deal with skeletons and the effects of the "curse". I mean it would fit the theme, but it wouldn't quite fit in since everyone else is a pure skeleton in that section. And in some cases a *real* skeleton, yipes.

Although with the whole movie change, they could probably do this effect as like a teaser or something...although the whole curse isn't really in the ride...

I know, I know. I should turn in my MiceChat membership, never to be seen again.
