  • Why can't we eat Walt's chili at the park?

Was it a certain brand, and if so, does anyone know which one?

For those who may not know what I'm talking about, Walt Disney's favorite thing to eat in the whole wide world was chili and crackers.

But as far as I know, it's not served in the Park anywhere. I could be wrong about that, and I hope that if I am, someone will tell me just where I can get some of Walt's chili.

Hey, look at this, I Googled it and I found Walt's personal chili recipe:
    http://www.recipesource.com/soups/ch...-disneys1.html

Title: Walt Disney's Own Chili and Beans
Categories: Chili, Legumes, Ground beef, Restaurants
    Yield: 6 -8 servs

    -------------------MICKEY'S GOURMET CKBK-------------------
    2 lb Dried pinto beans
    2 md Onions, sliced
    1/4 c Veg oil
    2 cl Garlic, diced
    1 c Celery, chpd
    2 lb Ground beef
1 t Chili powder, or more
    1 t Paprika
    1 t Dried thyme
28 oz Cn tomatoes, about 3c
    Salt and pepper

    ---------------------SPICIER VARIATION---------------------
    1/8 t Coriander
    1/8 t Turmeric
    1/8 t Chili seeds
    1/8 t Fennel
    1/8 t Cloves
    1/8 t Cinnamon
    1/8 t Dried ginger
    1 sm Mexican chili pepper

    Walt Disney's personal recipe.
Wash, sort and soak beans in cold water overnight.
Drain; place in 2 qt saucepan. Add water to cover 2"
over beans. Add onions and simmer in covered pot until
    tender, 2 hrs. Meanwhile, heat oil in lg sauce pot;
saute garlic until lightly browned. Add celery and
beef; cook. Add chili powder, paprika, and thyme.
Break up tomatoes with spoon and mix with meat
mixture; cover, simmer 1 hr. When beans are tender,
combine with meat, stirring gently. Salt and pepper
and add additional spices if desired, cook 30 mins.

OK, wait a minute. I looked at another site and found this:

According to the Disney archives, his favorite meal was chili and beans, which he ate with tomato juice and soda crackers.
Walt ate his chili and beans out of a can with soda crackers. He also put tomato juice in his beer.

P.S. Walt NEVER ate the chili and beans in this recipe:

    http://www.recipegoldmine.com/celebS/walt-disneys-chili-beans.html
Tomato juice in his beer? OK, that's just weird.

Then there was this quote also:

.....from an April 25,2003 article written by Don Freeman, "Walt Disney knew magic bowl of chili":

"It may surprise you to know that Walt Disney was so fanatic about chili that whenever he would pack for a business trip, several cans of Hormel chili went into his suitcase. He never went anywhere without a can of chili nearby."

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/m...25freeman.html

The Hormel Company was among the first of the corporate sponsors to work with Walt Disney. Hormel made their first canned chili in 1935.
Well, okay. Either way, whether it's this personal recipe (which may or may not be authentic) or just Hormel chili in the can, am I able to be served Walt's chili at Disneyland anywhere?

Just get a Chili Dog from Coke's Corner, White Water Snacks, Award Weiners etc.
Mom, remember, it's not what a person is like on the outside that counts,
it's what they are like in their HEART!

It's a dining option for at least A Walk In Walt's Footsteps Tour (and it tastes AMAZING, btw ).

Because it's got pieces of Walt in it?

Wonder if that's why they froze him.

          What Would Walt Eat ...

Walt liked to drink a scotch mist (or two) after work. I say DL needs to start serving those.

For awhile at least, the chili served at the Golden Horseshoe was advertised as "Walt's Chili."

Hmm. Thanks TDF, now I'm totally craving chili! It's nowhere cool enough though.

That's a good idea to have it served in the park somewhere. In a bread bowl, too. Ooooh.

                  :goes off to daydream:

Not any more. And you can get chili in a bowl at the Golden Horseshoe.

That is called a tomato beer and was used by my Father and many others in his age group for the "next day cure". Many bar regulars have those in the morning. It was also a sort of poor mans bloody mary.

Hmm, okay, that's at least something. I wonder why it's not on any other regularly available menu, though.

So there's precedent! They need to bring it back.

Sadly, Dennison's, which is now owned by Con-Agra Foods, is not distributed in my area. I'll have to look around for an online retailer if I want it.

Oh wow, cool, good, so it's even in a smart location to have chili.

Ahhhhh, ok. Dang, Walt must have been one hardcore party animal. Chain-smoking, whiskey-drinking, chili-and-cracker-eating, movie-making, union-busting, park-building maniac, he was!

My dad puts tomato juice in his beer all the time.. He was born in the 50's, and partied hard in the 70's, so maybe its a generational thing??

Sounds like a good theme for a winter meet in the picnic area at Disneyland!
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."
