  • Your Ideal SM

Just curious to know all your wonderful ideas. What, in your opinion, would make SM 'perfect'? This is my idea:

The queue outside would remain the same, but there would be exhibits alongside the queue documenting the Space Age, from Sputnik to the International Space Station, to make the wait more bearable. Then, when you get inside, you wouldn't go along a dark tunnel; instead, you would board a ToT-esque elevator, about 12 at a time, which would then descend.

Darkness in front of you, until...a wide open view of the cavernous loading area. The glass ceiling shows stars, meteors, comets, planets, flying by; it looks suspiciously like a giant TV screen. But before you can comment on this, the elevator shudders to a smooth stop, and you exit the elevator, to a queue of switchbacks, then finally you board the ride.

The car moves slowly forward towards a set of huge double doors, like on Indy; the doors swing open, and the train enters a vaultlike room. The doors behind you clang shut, drowning sounds of the loading platform. Ahead of you is another set of doors. The trains slows to a stop.

Green and red lights flicker around you, as a vacuumlike sound fills the air. The air is becoming stabilized to be consistent with space. A voice says, "Stabilizing complete. Launch process beginning in 5...4...3...2...1..."

The doors ahead of you swing open, offering a vista of space. Satellites, meteors, and comets swing by. Hey! Did I just see the Voyager II?

Before you have time to comprehend this, the train launches forward to 50 miles per hours. You hurtle past planets, swing past stars, narrowly avoid a meteor, and dip past comets.

The train shudders to a halt; the train is caught in a black hole! (same tech as Indy boulder) At the last second, when the black hole is about to swallow you up, the train shudders with one last, final, huge effort, and launches itself backwards. The train rockets around for one more minute, filled with thrilling turns and drops, and then...

A whoosh, and the train slows down; stars revolve at great speeds around you, and you are only dimly aware that the train is on a turntable, being turned around back into the front position. The stars slow down; the train moves forward; and it enters the unloading station. You exit, and the train goes off into worlds unknown (separate loading/unloading).

An escalator whisks you back up into Earth.

          Re: Your Ideal SM

Yeah, keep in mind that there are two SMs in DL--Splash and Space. :P

Your ideas are pretty cool, but there's not enough room to do all this. That's actually the number-one problem with most armchair re-Imagineering schemes--they're cool, but they completely disregard the space issue (no pun intended ). I was considering picking apart each and every interesting but unfortunately impossible idea in your proposal, but I'm realizing now that you're not some noob shouting "Hey Guys This Idea For Teh New Spaec Montain Roxors My Soxors lol!!" You're simply proposing a cool idea and asking for ours.

I like Space Mountain a lot the way it is. (Four times last time I was there!) I think the new music is very effective, especially from the beginning to when it picks up speed. The sense of wonderment is amazing, and it works perfectly with the attraction. The queue is fine; a little claustrophobic, yes, but there's really not much else that can be done with the amount of room available. I'd like the outdoor queue to be a lot more interesting and better themed, but I can tolerate the current setup.

My only real problem with the ride itself is the lack of the FX-1. While the stars and various projections can be genuinely beautiful, having something real to look at is nice, too. Light up the meteor, or add a planet, or a space station, or another space craft, or something. Something bright enough to be visible and to make your irises constrict a little, making it harder to make out the superstructure of the ride, and yet not so bright that it lights up the whole interior of the show building.

Space Mountain is the driving force behind Tomorrowland. I think WDI should be focused on spreading its influence through the rest of Tomorrowland, rather than on fixing a definitely-not-broke attraction. Just my two cents. Or three, if you take into account inflation...due to all the hot air I tend to spew.

Wellll I think if I could actually do something with Space Mountain, I'd do something like Disneyland Paris... except a launched blast-off is too intense for some kids that actually love the ride, so my suggestion is this:

That was from the original artwork for Space Mountain in Discoveryland, but imagine if our Space mountain looked like that! Enter the tunnel, then blast off to the moon realistically with swirling planets, comets, and other things, but making sure the place isn't that bright so we don't accidentally reveal the walls of Space Mountain's interior dome.

Also, maybe make the star effects like Tower of Terror's. That's awesome!! I guess Peter Pan uses similar technology, and that's what I expected from Space Mountain when it re-opened in 2005... but maybe they could do that!

Good idea? Maybe change the start of the ride to the pic what I showed above. A small launch that makes you race, but when you look up, there's Earth! We're in space!

That'd make DLP's Space Mountain design ethic more accessible to Americans, but it would homogenize the parks more, which isn't something I advocate. Retaining unique attractions helps encourage guests to try and enjoy all the parks. Gives you something to look forward to at other parks, you know?

As I said above, I think our SM is very effective. Its goals are entirely different from son cousin francais, but they're effective, nonetheless. I agree that making the inside resemble outer space even more would be great, but other than that, I'd rather not see any changes.

My point wasn't agreeing to cloning Paris's Space Mountain, because I'm actually against cloning. I know exactly what you mean by giving unique experiences... I was pointing the suggestion toward the Discovery Mountain that never was that included attractions based on Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Discovery Mountain was going to look like this:

Space Mountain - From the Earth to the Moon never-used concepts:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea never-used concepts:

Journey to the Center of the Earth never-used concepts:

*sighs* I wish we could have something like that in our Tomorrowland. Everybody thinks "space is futuristic!" but what about underwater cities and exploring the earth's center?? That's also futuristic because it's never happened! It's not retro-futuristic, because it still could happen. I wish we could get enough space to build this amazing mountain, but in Disneyland's small size, it'd probably take up all of Tomorrowland and Fantasyland.

                          Re: Your Ideal SM

You guys are gonna hate me for saying this, but I've never been much of a fan of Space Mountain, even though I'd like to be. Maybe the visual effects haven't worked right the times I've ridden it, but it falls way short of what I would regard as an ideal Tomorrowland space travel attraction. The ride is bumpy and erratic. Rather than reminding me of space travel and exciting me about possibilities there, it feels like a roller coaster. The entire experience is earth-bound for me.

The reason it disappoints me so is that if done differently it would be my favorite ride in all of Disney-dom. My concept for the ride is totally incompatible with the current show building and track for SM, and in addition would be unrealistically expensive to implement, so just regard this one as pure blue-sky armchair imagineering.

I really love the sensation of flying, which is why I like Soarin' so much. The sensations of speed and weightlessness can be accomplished visually (e.g. the IMAX screen in Horizons at Epcot, Soarin'...), but how much more effective would it be if combined with actual lateral motion? My ideal ride system, therefore would be something like a large simulator base on a very smooth roller coaster track. Think Indy but with the entire ride vehicle enclosed in a small IMAX-style screen.

Simulators make me queasy; the general trajectory of this ride would be more linear, so the focus would be on speed, not on erratic motion with tight curves. Also, the propulsion would need to be entirely inductive, not gravity-based unless you were very clever about how it was laid out.

There could be several themes for the ride, but if it were story-based, I'd just as soon avoid the old "something goes wrong" approach. I like the idea of it having something to do with reality, like a tour of the solar system, passing the ISS and heading all the way out to the Kuiper Belt or beyond, talking about the planets and the actual possibilities of space travel. Kind of the inverse of Adventure Through Inner Space.

If done right, I would LOVE this ride. Now that Mission to Mars is no longer part of TL, the mantle falls on SM to provide the experience of space travel. I feel that it currently doesn't manage that.

Regarding the post above me. That's a very neat idea. I think it could be pulled off wonderfully. But. I doubt we have room for that kind of ride in Disneyland.

Nope, I meant son cousin francais. Son is the possessive form of il, which means "he" or "it," here referring to the "it" of Space Mountain. Hence, "its French cousin."

My ideal ride system, therefore would be something like a large simulator base on a very smooth roller coaster track. Think Indy but with the entire ride vehicle enclosed in a small IMAX-style screen.
Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I see no practical advantage to this. Indy's EMV concept works because it allows a smooth track to feel bumpy, wild, and un-track-like without the wear-and-tear, with differences in the "performance" each time. Star Tours' simulator concept works because it allows a thrilling, special-effects-laden film to feel real without WDI investing in constructing a huge show building with complex three-dimensional special effects and an insane track. But combining these two for a Space-Mountain-esque ride seems totally superfluous to me. In the enclosed simulator, you wouldn't feel the wind in your hair...you'd feel the jittering of the track beneath you...you'd be getting sensations from the actual turns and drops and hills that you could just as easily get from a simulator moving around in one spot...and you'd be using a much larger space than a pure simulator attraction like Star Tours takes. What's the upside? Not trying to be negative, but I just don't see the point when virtually the same sensations are possible with a simulator and with an actual rollercoaster.

(I'm not trying to say that simulators and rollercoasters feel the same! I just mean that the G-forces themselves are easy to replicate in a simulator, though the slight mismatch with the visuals can be more nauseating than the real-world solidity of a rollercoaster. This downside to simulators is another that would affect your idea, unfortunately.)

Skipped over some posts. Sorry if this has been mentioned. But the only change I would make is very simple.

In the loading dock, in the triangular windows next to the video screen showing the planets I would continue this projection onto the side triangular windows. This way it would look more like you are in a space station traveling through outer space. And you are riding in a pod vehicle launched from the space station...

It sounds to me like you are indeed saying that they feel the same and then putting in a side note that they don't feel the same! =)

Your body can tell the difference between G forces and being tilted in a simulator. Now maybe the solution doesn't have to be as space-consuming as mine - it could use a centrifuge similar to Mission:Space - but a normal simulator would not be able to produce the experience I have in mind.

When the ride reopened from the reconstruction, I was amazed at how tight that thing was. I hadn't remembered it that way from before. The car itself isn't tight. But the lap bars are tight in the extreme.
