Just curious to know all your wonderful ideas. What, in your opinion, would make SM 'perfect'? This is my idea:
The queue outside would remain the same, but there would be exhibits alongside the queue documenting the Space Age, from Sputnik to the International Space Station, to make the wait more bearable. Then, when you get inside, you wouldn't go along a dark tunnel; instead, you would board a ToT-esque elevator, about 12 at a time, which would then descend.
Darkness in front of you, until...a wide open view of the cavernous loading area. The glass ceiling shows stars, meteors, comets, planets, flying by; it looks suspiciously like a giant TV screen. But before you can comment on this, the elevator shudders to a smooth stop, and you exit the elevator, to a queue of switchbacks, then finally you board the ride.
The car moves slowly forward towards a set of huge double doors, like on Indy; the doors swing open, and the train enters a vaultlike room. The doors behind you clang shut, drowning sounds of the loading platform. Ahead of you is another set of doors. The trains slows to a stop.
Green and red lights flicker around you, as a vacuumlike sound fills the air. The air is becoming stabilized to be consistent with space. A voice says, "Stabilizing complete. Launch process beginning in 5...4...3...2...1..."
The doors ahead of you swing open, offering a vista of space. Satellites, meteors, and comets swing by. Hey! Did I just see the Voyager II?
Before you have time to comprehend this, the train launches forward to 50 miles per hours. You hurtle past planets, swing past stars, narrowly avoid a meteor, and dip past comets.
The train shudders to a halt; the train is caught in a black hole! (same tech as Indy boulder) At the last second, when the black hole is about to swallow you up, the train shudders with one last, final, huge effort, and launches itself backwards. The train rockets around for one more minute, filled with thrilling turns and drops, and then...
A whoosh, and the train slows down; stars revolve at great speeds around you, and you are only dimly aware that the train is on a turntable, being turned around back into the front position. The stars slow down; the train moves forward; and it enters the unloading station. You exit, and the train goes off into worlds unknown (separate loading/unloading).
An escalator whisks you back up into Earth.
