  • Submarines in 10 years

I think Finding Nemo is dated, and very confusing for people who haven't seen the movie. A few days after I rode it for the first time, I thought: "What if I hadn't seen the movie?" Then I imagined those who went on a submarine ride, and heard "Now we're going to find Nemo and his friends!" and they were probably thinking, "Who's Nemo?" Then they notice it's probably the little clownfish that everybody's calling. And random characters appear, and you're wondering "How do THEY know Nemo?" Then by the end, you'll probably not notice that Marlin is Nemo's dad unless you're a repeat visitor, or if you rent the movie.

That's the only problem with submarine voyage right now, and I'm not even sure if it'll last for more than 10 years. I'm aware of this which is why I propose a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction. I know some of you are thinking that to understand it, you'd have to read the book or rent the movie, but no. You're introduced to these characters in the preshow.

I haven't really figured where to put the queue. We'd probably have to remove Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters to divide the building half to 20,000 Leagues and half to the new PeopleMover project. So that's my best guess of how to do the queue.

Entering the queue, we're walking through Arronax's museum back in France. If you haven't read the book and don't know who Arronax is, he's the main character Jules Verne talks through in the book. Ok, but ordinary people who haven't read the book will see this museum as an awesome queue to display the certain fish that will be found on the ride. Yes, the fish could be real if WDI wants them to. Orrr they could make fossil replicas of these fish, so they display preserved dead fish (just models, never been alive), whatever floats their boat (get it? 20,000 Leagues, float your boat... mehh...)

So among here, we see unique fish, and at the end of the museum, we see a huge newspaper from the 1860s, warning about the Giant Squid spotted in the ocean depths.

The next part of the queue will wind into a submarine loading dock, where the preshow starts. Captain Nemo (animatronic) will appear from behind the curtains. At first, he's frozen, sitting at his desk, reading over some documents. When the spotlight comes on, he turns and looks at you, introducing himself as "Captain Nemo, ruler of the sea, and inventor of the Nautilus". Through plasma flat screen TVs, we see a three-dimensional view of the submarines, how they perform briefly, and our mission: to explore the underwater depths for the lost continent of Atlantis.

An alarm sounds and Nemo tells you to quickly proceed into the Nautilus, because storms are threatening the safety of sea conditions, and we might not be able to surface for hours if we don't leave immediately. So we're led outside to the mystical island of Vulcania, as we've found out, where Nemo lived and manufactured the Nautilus.

So we see tropical plants, rocks, and waterfalls everywhere, much like MK's 20,000 Leagues attraction, except seriously updated. Everybody can look at the lagoon of Vulcania and admire the beauty, while watching people board their submarines, and slowly leave the dock.

In the lagoon, we're cruising through Vulcania lagoon, which Captain Nemo explains as "the last safe haven from this point, and to continue forth will present more dangers". Here, we see the unique and tropical creatures in Vulcania, which could be sea turtles, basses, tangs, whatever safe and passive creatures that could be presented.

Then Nemo dives below the surface, and following the book, we visit the underwater forests, where we nearly get attacked by a giant sea spider, and soon some sharks as well. Anyhow, I'm not exactly sure how the rest of the story goes EXACTLY, but I'll try to guess, since I haven't read it for a few months. I believe we then venture to the polar ice cap, to the deep ocean, and are attacked by a giant squid.

Ok, the giant squid scene could be seriously updated, and it'd be extremely scary. Ok, imagine the submarine vibrating, a hissing noise, a sudden stop, and being plunged into darkness.

Nemo asks over the intercom, "What's wrong? Why did we stop?"

The in-command replies, "I'm not sure. If we struck a reef, the impact would've felt enormous. My guess is... we caught something."

"No," Nemo replies unsteadily, "We didn't catch something... something caught US."

Tentacles creep upward very slowily, and the second in-command shouts, "Sir! It's a..."

    "Giant Squid!!" the in-command screams.

Just then, the pressure gauges go berserk, the sound of leaks rise, and horrifyingly, the sound of flooding! "We've sprung a leak in the passenger room!" the in-command shouts.

"Our guests!" Captain Nemo yells, then speaks to the audience, "Everybody stay calm and completely silent, for there is a danger among us. If it doesn't see or hear us, we'll be fine."

Just then... the giant squid's eye is present. The in-command screams, the sound of lashing tentacles comes, and a splash is heard.

    "What happened?" Captain Nemo shouts.

The second in-command says, "The squid got him!"

    "What!?" Captain Nemo exclaims.

A huge rumble, vibration, and explosion occurs, red and white flashes happen, the bubbles and water turn red, the submarine lights come on and off, before the light bulbs explode one-by-one (special effect of course, only the noise happens and each light is turned off individually).

A ghastly roar in the red water, and the squid's mouth is seen. Everything goes black, and a crunching noise happens. Then an electric zap... The lights come back on as if Nemo fixed them, and everything looks like we've surfaced again.

Captain Nemo says, "Sorry for the scare. The squid caused an explosion in the engine room, but thankfully, it wasn't anything too major. We've escaped, and probably, we won't venture that far beneath the sea again."

Something like that. Sorry for the long details, but I just imagined this horrifying scene in my mind. When the squid's eye shows, maybe it could look similar to TDS's?

I'm still forming the ride, but what do you think about a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction in 10 or 20 years in the Tomorrowland lagoon? Maybe sooner? I love the idea! How about you?
I am a rabid Disney fan. Possible future Imagineer (already designing rides for it)... I've only been to Disneyland. I'm hoping to go to Disney World this summer for the first time, and TDR might be possible in 3 years.

Great idea! I agree, the current Nemo attraction will get seriously dated in the next couple of decades.

I doubt it'll be any worse than someone who's never seen Peter Pan, Snow White, or Alice & Wonderland...

When I saw this thread, I was actually thinking of retheming it to be like what the WDW ex Submarine Ride used to be. XD

Now hang on to them hats n' glasses, cause this here's the wildest ride in the wilderness!

Fat chance about Nemo fading into obscurity... I mean at any given time I go to an aquarium,I always hear "It's Nemo!" or "Look! A Dory!"
It's become a modern classic so deal with it..
And yeah, even if people haven't seen the movie, it's just the same as if they rode any of the Fantasyland dark rides without seeing the source material.

The thing about kids is that they have short memories. Kids 10 years ago were all about Barney and Teletubbies and you don't see much of them around nowadays. In 10 years kids won't even know who Nemo is. It's a modern fad and won't have the staying power of a Peter Pan or Snow White because it lacks the depth that traditional 2D animation has.

Don't get me wrong, Nemo makes an EXCELLENT movie, one of my favorites, it just doesn't belong as a $100+ million, permanent attraction at Disneyland. Let's face it, 3D animation is great for the bottom line, but it won't match that deep emotion that 2D animation has given people for many, many decades. There are tiny details in traditional animation and nuances that human hands put into 2D that no computer will ever duplicate.

Disney has evicted the Swiss Family Robinsons and Tom Sawyer for kids' lack of recognition, I would like them to do the same with Nemo when its time comes...in about 10 years. It wouldn't be consistent if they failed to remove the Nemo theme after they've removed classic rides for kids not knowing their backstories. It would be incredibly expensive to redo the Nemo ride, but they should've thought of that before they created a ride based on a current film.

Perhaps in another many, many decades people will be saying the same for 3D animation and 4D animation.

Dude, I walk into a pet shop that carries marine fish and I hear "Dory!!! IT'S DORY!!" I love the movie Finding Nemo, but it just isn't futuristic to Tomorrowland... Finding Nemo would be an awesome addition to Fantasyland and I'd seriously approve of it, but for it to be located in Tomorrowland it makes me feel like such a waste of something that could've been put there... like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Remember when that poster was there mysteriously in 2000 or 2001 (I forget when, but some years ago)?

I was so excited. Why did they have to use Fantasyland material in Tomorrowland? Relocate the entrance or something, just don't make it a part of our future. I want the future to be discovering the unknown continent of Atlantis with Captain Nemo... I want the future to be shooting beyond the stars to find our purpose of existence in outer space... I want the future to be exploring the Earth's burning core... I want the future to be controlling weather... I want the future to be time travel...

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is an awesome ride, and I rate it #2 of things to see in the entire DLR. But yet putting it in Tomorrowland... makes it feel so strange. Ah well, great ride? I just hope someday they put in a futuristic theme once they find a different place to put Nemo (the clownfish, not the Captain :P)

Then they notice it's probably the little clownfish that everybody's calling.

Then couldn't WDI just fix the Nemo ride so you're introduced to the characters and who they are then? Maybe in the queue somewhere? or perhaps even in the show?

This "problem" you're stating has a easier solution to it then knocking out a couple rides to make room for an attraction that IMO has no business being in "Tomorrowland" in the first place.
