  • Disneyland College Program Questions

I was wondering if anybody has gone through or know anything much about the Disneyland College program. My university is having a WDW College Presentation, but I inquired if there was a DL Program and they said yes and would have a DL rep at the presentation, but they didn't know much about it. So I wondered if anybody could shed some light on this from personal experience?

    Thanks

I have a friend who is currently enrolled and is the representative on our campus for the DCP.

If you have any specific questions, I can shoot them over to him ASAP

      Re: Disneyland College Program Questions

I'm currently doing the College Program out here at Walt Disney World.

I applied back in February (I think) where you put in your information and which role you would be interested in. Afterward I scheduled a phone interview a week or so later. The interview was about a half hour long where the guy asked me a bunch of questions (i.e. "Why do you want to work for Disney?") and asked about my previous work experience. I think it was a little over a month after the interview that I got the packet in the mail and got accepted for a merchandise role.

I moved out to Florida in May. When I arrived I found out I would be working in the Emporium at the Magic Kingdom. I've loved every minute of my experience. I've met some of my best friends out here and I love the interactions I have with guests every day.

My program was scheduled to be over in January, but I will probably extend it and switch to either ride operations (I get to request, so I'm going to ask for Tower, Mansion, or Safaris at DAK!) or entertainment. After that I might move out here permanently with my current roommate.

The major difference between DLR and WDW's College Program is that Florida's provides housing for the CP's. You would have to find your own housing out in Anaheim or the surrounding area. That was the major factor in my decision to move all the way out here from Modesto. It's also nice to have 4 theme parks, Downtown Disney and PI during my free time!

If you have any other questions, I'll be happy to answer.

I, too, have been considering trying this program after I graduate, what sort of classes is anyone taking who is enrolled? Are they valuable? I'm considering some sort of career with Disney, perhaps sometime in the future. Do you think the college program is a good place to start?

Well, I live in Southern California (but in a school outside of CA) and housing is not a concern and my field of study is Hotel/Restaurant Management, but I'm considering a park position, either attractions and/or merchandise, but thanks to all the posts. It gives me a bit more information about the program.

            Re: Disneyland College Program Questions

Good to hear. I completed a interview almost two weeks ago and waiting to hear back from the college program. I am probably going to transfer schools if I do get accepted and then start the program in Anaheim. I am about 45 minutes away. So I hope and think it will be worth it. How busy do you stay in the DCP?

You should definitely go for a Front Desk role if you want to go into Hotel Management! I want to work in Special Events (really for Disney, but I've got a couple of years so we'll see) and my friend in the DCP says that it's a great place to start.

                        Re: Disneyland College Program Questions

Good luck to everyone interviewing for a CP role. My CP was one of the best summers of my life, making friends...my Ductorate is still hanging on my wall. Just be warned, you might love it too much! I graduated college and went back to WDW 3 days later for a "summer job". That summer job turned into an even more amazing 6 year role in entertainment.

Again, good luck and I hope things fall into place for you all!

did anybody earn credit for college while in the program, because a few people i have spoken to about it were not sure if some colleges accept them or not.

The classes are great! The Disneyland CP only offers a few classes while the WDWCP expanded its courses last fall to include the Exploration Series along with their Collegiate and Professional Development Studies courses. (The courses will go through another update this Spring.)

Yes, that and the work environment - includuing classes, schedule structure, available roles, etc. are all different. Both programs have been in existence for some time, but WDW's has been around for a consistent 26+ years.

The program is open to graduating seniors as well. They can then apply for the Professional Internships (more available at WDW than DLR) to follow the semester after their program.

The credit depends upon your own school since each situation is different. Many students take online courses or work with advisors and instructors to create their own learning plan or even directed study while on the program. There are also options for transfer credit from a number of schools across the country for the WDWCP. (Credit through other schools.)

Again - if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. There are a number of Disney College Program Campus Reps out there for both programs and it is their job to assist you the best they can. Also, if you decide to look into thw WDW program there is a good thread on-going dicussion thread in the MC WDW section found here. Good luck!

This is exactly what I needed to know. I'm glad this could still be an option for me then.

Thanks so much for the info, it was super helpful!

I wonder if you, or anybody else, knows what sort of opportunities there are in the program for a lowly English Major?

                              Thanks again for the responses!

First of all, there's no such thing as an English major (or at least that's what my roommate tells me, but then there's the Avenue Q story :cwink:.)

But the Disney College Program is open to all majors and all levels. Look at the Role Descriptions for specifics regarding what is available. It's also good to keep in mind the five main roles that they cast College Program students in and that require the most Cast Members - Operations, Merchandise, Lifeguarding, Custodial, and Quick Service Food & Beverage. If you are looking for Professional Internship, then yes - those are often major specific. When those are listed for Fall then you'll be able to search and see what's available since they tend to vary each time around.

I actually attended the WDW presentation at my school wanting info about the DL program. There was a representative there from the DL program, but they did interviews right after the presentation and I didn't get to speak to her. Instead, I attended the e-presentation, scheduled my phone interview and faxed in my application.

I had my interview about two weeks ago. During my interview, I was asked if I wanted to know the results. They told me right then that I had been accepted, but I have yet to receive the informational package. But please feel free to ask questions and I will try to answer them as much as possible.

This is my first time with the Disney College Program and California is closer to home for me not to mention I have a lot fo family out there. Most of the boards on other website are about the WDW, so It's nice to see someone else interested in DL.

I went to the WDWCP info session wanting to do the DL program as well, but it wasn't running anymore. It has only recently restarted. I don't think that it isn't about students being interested but certain things (mainly housing) can other factors in the way of doing the DL program. They are both great learn experiences offering a wonderful internship opportunity, great courses, great newtorking options, and everything else you decide to make out it.
