  • New Little Mermaid DCA rumour

    Hey all,

Screamscape is reporting that the Little Mermaid dark ride--according to what they've heard--may be put in the Ariel's Grotto building instead of Golden Dreams as Al Lutz has said.

Whether or not this is true (I, for one, consider Lutz far more reliable than Screamscape), this potential is interesting. While I'm sure it would make many unhappy to lose the Cove bar, placing the Little Mermaid ride in that building would diffuse much of the controversy regarding theming issues, as the Little Mermaid would inevitably fit in with Paradise Pier better than San Francisco.

But would the Ariel Grotto building even have enough room for a full-size dark ride and queue? Furthermore, if they did do this, what would they replace Golden Dreams with?

Put the relocated Cove Bar where Golden Dreams/Screams is.

I believe that if they were to put a dark ride where Golden Dreams is, they would have to expand the building because its not very big. The Little Mermaid ride would be a great addition and something un-pixar related which would be a nice change.

If you bought the recent DVD release of "Little Mermaid" you can see and "ride" a CGI of a proposed ride although its possible they may tweek it. Given that the long running show at Disney's MGM Studios is to close, Ariel needs to be firmly represented in the parks.

You can see the ride here:

I think when it comes to the theme issues at hand with California Adventure, we are going to have to give a little bit. They have a large amount of money, but that is to go towards bettering what is there, not reconstructing the park ground up. So while putting Little Mermaid over by Ariel's Grotto would make more sense, it would cost a large amount of money and would hurt the end result. There is going to have to be some give and take here. They certainly don't have to do what they are doing. They could have easily done another shoddy make over. They are putting things right, but they are going to have to do it within the confines of a pre-built infrastructure. I'm not saying it's ok and all wonderful, it simply is the way things are in the reality of the budget and construction.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

And that would bring a tear to the eye of one Leanza Cornette, the first Ariel at Disney Hollywood Studios, who became Miss America 1993.

Isn't the Princess dining there a huge draw? Princesses have been lucrative money makers (not to be confused with prostitutes, please) and it's where Ariel has her land legs, too.

They may have to knock a wall out and expand if needed for the Golden Screams/Dreams area IIRC.

If they went underneath the pier, it'd be doable. Hard but doable.

I like the idea of having a ride that "firmly represents" the movie however, isn't there other shelved attractions that Disney could use??????? thats what I think.

I don't think that building is big enough for a ride, period. Secondly, isn't some of the building over water? You couldn't put it on top of water without alot of supports. Third, Wheelchair access to Ariels Grotto is only via an elevator. Fourth, consider the source. Wouldn't work IMO.

They won't tear out two successful food locations when the park is struggling.

Yeah, there's no way the ride could fit into that restaurant building. However, I'm sure there could have been a way to build the ride adjacent to it, like on the east side of the walkway that curves down towards Screamin.

I've always wondered why they don't put it in the vacant Chinese food place. It looks like they have room to expand that building and part of the dining area - under the stored dorys - could be used as queue space.

But I have faith Imagineering has it all figured out.

why not build it in a new/expanded building right across from the grotto (replacing catch a flave and most of that white wooden fence that leads to screamin'), stretching into the timon lot a bit. the ride wouldnt have such space limitations as it might have otherwise

plus, how cool would a giant, stylized sand king triton castle look there, serving as both a weenie and as the entrance to the ride building? itd be a way to kinda-sorta tie the ride into the PP theming.....

I don't think that the size of the building is an issue here. They could always expand the building/ dock.

Ariel's Grotto will be a tough loss, but that would be a better location for the Little Mermaid Ride than the Golden Dreams building.
