  • Farewell [Non-Holiday] Small World

Today is the last day It's a Small World in its non-holiday form will be open until early 2009.

Starting tomorrow, the attraction will be closed October 22 - November 8 to dress up for the holidays, and once its holiday run is over (actually sometime late January), Small World will embark on a massive 9-month refurbishment to replace the trough and the boats, as well as spruce up the props and dolls (most of which will be removed for cleaning), repaint the exterior facade, give the entrance a brand new sign, and redo the postcard "hello" and "good-bye" rooms.

Once that grandiose refurbishment reaches completion, assuming all goes according to schedule, it will be just in time for the 2008 holiday season and It's a Small World Holiday. Which brings us to 2009.

Farewell hello and good-bye rooms. You served your purpose, but there's so much more potential.

May the rollicking song continue to roll through our heads throughout 2008.

Glad that we got to ride it "one last time" two weeks ago before the refurb...

    Thanks!

Glad we rode it yesterday. It's one of my little guy's favorites.

The last time I remember a Disneyland without small world was in the '80s. I remember seeing the barricades surrounding it (they didn't use the all too familiar refurb walls). I remember seeing the fireworks. All the spinning stuff on the facade was off as were the lights and the clock wasn't used at all that time.

How depressing I can't imagine going to DL without IASW smiling over and the clock ticking. It better be a pretty darn good refurb if it's taking 9 mos to complete.

              That's how I felt in the '80s (maybe '85)

What was changed in the 80s?

First and foremost, the refurbishment is borne out of necessity - as in, preventing boats from stalling in a show building with no surveillance cameras to even detect that a stall occurred. But WDI is taking advantage of the closure and sprucing up the existing props (most of which, it should be mentioned again, are the 1964 NY World's Fair originals). Most of the improvements will be similar to what was recently done to the Tiki Room - fixing long-broken show elements, and adding enhanced lighting and sound. And that is perfectly appropriate, as Small World is a classic. What it needs is some well-funded TLC, not necessarily new show elements.

I think the finished product will be well worth the wait, but expect the bulk of the show to stay how it is - just in really good shape.

Haha, I'm glad that it is just going to be updating/fixing the ride. Although I haven't minded getting stalled in the ride

But, anyways, a small part of me is excited that they're doing the refurb, as it will make an already awesome ride even better. And those poor dolls, after 43 years they deserve some tlc!

Thanks for calming my fears of bringing modern technology into a classic, though.

9 months isn't bad. I think that's about the same amount of time the Tiki Room was in refurbishment, and Small World is a much bigger job.

I went on it tonight and I've gotta say they started playing with things for the overlay a bit early. Many many many dolls were missing and something about each scene seemed off... it was a lot quieter and you could hear little trinkets of music that you normally might not have due to singing. And in the Polynesian area the ship had crashed into a rock or something because the whole set area was torn down =P And that rainforest amazon room sure is getting ready to be covered up with a whole lotta nothing heh.

Wow, this couldn't sound more unintelligent, but not until 2009? When you put it that way, it sounds like a long, long time.

Y'all are funny. It's like having a baby - 9 months of wishing and waiting. It'll be worth it when it's ready though. I'm looking forward to the sparkling new updates!
