  • A MAJOR DCA slam in today's Hollywood Reporter

Rick Munarriz, senior analyst with the Motley Fool, said Animal Kingdom before the improvements was a lot like California Adventure is now: "A half-day park with a full-day price."

Therefore, Munarriz said, Disney shareholders ought to applaud the move to upgrade California Adventure despite the hefty cost, because the alternative is unacceptable.

"It's a broken park," he said. "Most companies close down their broken parks. But Disney can't afford that kind of egg on its mouse-face."

Glad they are spending the money, and looking forward to the new DCA 2.0, or whatever the new name will be in 2011......

Ditto that, plus the integrity to invest in their future. I applaud the renovation.

Well they weren't going to turn the land back into a parking lot :P It needed to be a better theme park and patching it wasn't going to be enough for significant growth to the resort and completely renovating it, while somewhat close to tearing the whole thing down and starting over, is cheaper than doing so. Writing an article in 2007 calling DCA a half day park isn't a major slam at it, it's practically a ric romero-ism.

I wouldn't really say that's a major slam either, Disney's Studios and Animal Kingdom both were half day parks when they opened and for several years after.

DCA's "major slam" was the cold shoulder it has been given by the Disney company since it's opening. Until just recently it was thought best to ignore it and not acknowledge it as a problem. They made it worse because no one wanted to take care of it and nurture it. No one wanted to give it a chance and let it develop. Some may be standing and cheering that they are finally going to put some effort into this so called "Theme Park". I will believe it when I see it. I don't care about flashy concept art... I've seen the concept art for TL98, Light Magic, DCA the first time around, Pooh, Finding Nemo, and Buzz... in all cases the reality was not even close to the project that was promised.

Because I love DCA, and I only want it to be better.

The even bigger slam was the cold shoulder the public gave the park after it opened. Talk about kicking someone when they're down.

This guy needs to go to non Disney parks and see how some of them are 1/4 day parks at a full price.

So DCA is a broken park, but it's a lot like Animal Kingdom.

How is that a slam? It seems he's simply suggesting that Disney always builds "Broken Parks" and then fixes them - just as they did to Epcot, and Animal Kingdom and now DCA. I guess you can say the term "Broken Park" could be a slam, and Rick has been pretty biased against DCA since opening day - but if you really want to look at everything closely, pretty much every Disney park has been "Broken" at some point and been repaired.

Hmm... I didn't see that as a "major slam" either. It's actually more of a slam on Animal Kingdom!

It's just a factual opinion that was pointed out and everyone should know it.

And animal kingdom I recently learned closes early because it takes 2 hours to put all the animals away at night in their sheds and homes to get their nightly health check. Now, if they add enough rides they could probably leave it open while the animal walk throughs can close earlier.
