  • John Lasseter at DL Saturday 11/17!!

As my girlfriend and I arrived at DL this Saturday around 12:30 we walked through the tunnel and John Lasseter and his family walked right by me! Unfortunately I was way too stunned (I know I'm a nerd) to get a picture but it was most definitely him. Hopefully they were walking over to DCA to come up with even more ideas for the rebuild! Aside from that, we saw the afternoon Christmas parade which already looked sharp this early in the season. Santa even spotted my girlfriend's Happy Birthday pin and wished her a Happy Birthday! Some people were in front of the tree filming a TV spot as the parade started. I couldn't tell who they were with but their microphone said "MORE" on it, whatever that is. The castle looked great although the stage set up for Sunday's taping of the Christmas show blocked the view somewhat. Overall, great weather and moderately decent crowds made for a nice day at the park.
I'm literally a born Disney fan! I was born at Providence St. Joseph Med Center right across the street from Disney Studios in Burbank. The same hospital where Walt died.

By the way my shirt in the pic says "I like big sharks and I cannot lie"

John Lasseter was spotted in DCA and Disneyland on Friday too, so he must be spending the weekend in Anaheim. He sure likes Disneyland!

Well it's more important he is at Disneyland and DCA.

I'm just pleased to see someone in the Disney brass stepping foot in the parks without a press event to force them.

          Lasseter gets it.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Are you kidding? The man has Disney coursing through half his veins. He's a total Disney goob, let alone a Disneyland one. I don't think it is a coincidence that DLR is getting most of his attention when it comes to the parks.

As for him and his family there, I believe he was there primarily for the Snow White anniversary art gallery showing and screening. There have been a few news reports with him being interviewed and viewing the artwork.

              Heh.

Lasseter was (probably) at Disneyland to find a way to cram a Ratatouille ride in New Orleans Square in order to further his company's position of dominance over Disney but yeah, he has Disneyland's best interests in mind when trampling all over Tomorrowland's theme with Buzz and Nemo. This guy is no Disney savior.

Oh these "Pixar is taking over Disneyland" posts never get old!

And to get some facts straight Pixar was never at any one point Lasseter's Company. He had quite the amount of creative swing but it was never his company. Secondly, I'd rather have the subs back up as Nemo than have nothing there at all except a big pond that guests liked to throw trash into.

And lastly, along with the group of people at Imagineering; Lasseter is LEADING the savior of the Disney Company -- at least creatively that is.

I love Lasseter and all that he is doing. At least someone who claims they love DL truly shows it by all the time and work he puts into the park(s).

And as for Pixar entering the parks...I personally don't find anything wrong with it. Pixar now belongs to Disney which makes Pixar characters Disney characters. Disney didn't want to come up with their own new movies, characters, etc. so they went ahead and bought a company that did. No complaints from me.

The guy believes in story and quality product, which is as close as we've come in a long time to someone who is fighting for Walt's ideals. So what if a majority of his ideas thus far have incorporated films that he has worked on? You have to take into account the relative speed with which he has transcended to prominence in the company - he's just getting started. And when you're new at something, you tend to stick to what you know. I'm putting money on the fact that the more experience he gets working with the parks, the less emphasis there will be on Pixar films.

Re: John Lasseter at DL Saturday 11/17!!

John was presenting at the Snow White event at DCA on Saturday.

Regarding Pixar and Disney: To each his own I guess. IMO, Pixar represents more of the heart, creativity, and originality that Disney was once known for than Disney currently does. John cares about bringing back the 'Walt Disney' into the studios, the same legacy that inspired the entire staff at Pixar and more importantly the founders and directors of the studio. To many individuals there is no separation between Woody and Disney, between Nemo and Disney, between Sully and Disney, between and McQueen and Disney. These characters that happen to be created by Pixar not only have set the standard for family entertainment but have become the new definition of the words "Walt Disney Animation." Disney fans would be disappointed if Disney had lost that relationship with Pixar and we had to settle for Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, and the rest of the CG efforts as Disney's best foot forward. Pixar could have partnered with Universal and had their creative team continue to build and market Pixar themed attractions.

Regarding orignality in the parks, I miss it too. I really do. But as Al Lutz has stated in his recent interview, Disney will continue to create movie based attractions because quite simply, it works. The heads of the studios, John and Dick Cook, have theme park history in their blood. The relationship is closer than ever before and will continue in that direction because of the extremely healthy ROI. Movie based attractions bring in the crowds, crowds bring in a lot of money, money supports the theme park we love.

PIXAR is still animation and this is what the animation world is doing now. DL would never be able to compete for the kid dollar if they didn't support, pay for, market, merchandise and exploit CGI animation. Wouldn't it be great if DL could have stayed exactly as Walt had left it? No. It would be long gone by now. PIXAR helps pay for HM, IASW, Main Street and Snow castle. You may not like PIXAR PLAY PALS PARADE (or whatever its called--please do not post 1000 times that I got it wrong--I don't care). The only thing inevitable is change and PIXAR is the future. Even Mickey is starting to look like he came from a PIXAR film these days. Besides, I like Buzz and Woody.

If we went ahead and got rid of characters AND rides in the park that were not originally imagined by Disney, then half the park wouldn't be there. You'd have to get rid of Star Tours, Indy, Pooh, Snow White, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty and her castle,....the list goes on and on.
