Walt had to be presuaded though by Roy. Roy was astounded at how much Sleeping Beauty's budget had ballooned and insisted that Walt name the castle Sleeping Beauty's as a way to publicize the film (even though it was still four years away).

Walt wanted to call the castle Cinderella Castle, but obviously Roy won out in the end.

just a little bit of Disney trivia I recently learned about!

At least she didn't dance in DCA in front of Whoopies Theater, wouldn't that have been wonderful. Most of us would have felt relieved if she thought she was in Disney Paris!

Chad says he has a wild ride but so far no Guests have come forward to verify said claim publicly. There has been some speculation that this may be typical Disney overreaching like ROA or YOAMD.

Walt wanted Snow White Castle. That is why the Castle is Bavarian in design.Cinderella Castle is more French in design. Snow White was based on a Germanic version (Grimm) and Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty a French version.

I'm not surprised, but it is rather annoying that even ABC let that through.

Honestly, just because they're both blonds, for some reason they're always mixed up as one or the other.

But that just goes to show how fantastic the attention span of the general public is.

It's beyond me why Disney hasn't used the other princesses for newer castles. There's no excuse for building OUR castle over again in China. Why not build Beast's castle? Snow White's?

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

I'm pretty sure that the castle came by its current name a few years after the park's opening. I've heard it was initially unnamed and switched between several during the first few years. The opening day broadcast supports this confusion as it is referred to as Fantasyland Castle during the dedication of Fantasyland.

Well it looks like poor Jenny Garth was voted off the show last night. If only she had called it Sleeping Beauty Castle she just might have made it to the final round.

There is a difference between the Fantasyland castle (meaning: the castle of Fantasyland) and the Fantasyland Castle.

Sleeping Beauty Castle was never named "Fantasyland Castle", but the Bavarian-influenced structure was, indeed, originally intended to be Snow White Castle. So much of the design, to this day, reflects the German fairy tale. By the time Disneyland eventually opened, though, the French fairy tale, "Sleeping Beauty", received the honor, perhaps, because Walt Disney's baby, at the time, was this much grander and more elaborate answer to his first foray into feature animation.

Still, to me, Sleeping Beauty Castle seems to rightfully belong to Snow White.

Walt calls it Snow White Castle on July 17 in the broadcast.

Not sure if there's weight to the story that a Bavarian castle was chosen as the inspiration because it is German - I think just because it looked like what Walt wanted.

Despite the two above points, I had thought the name was officially Sleeping Beauty Castle before July 17. Walt just mis-spoke, using the 'working name' for the castle in the months prior. Why was it changed? Because the Sleeping Beauty movie (still a few years off) could reap some advance word of mouth as a result.

I suppose my dates could be off and the name was in fact solidified later - i'll have to check on that.

Why do people keep saying that Walt Disney was using Sleeping Beauty Castle to promote a single film? What's the basis for that assertion?

You don't see a Rapunzel tower in the park, or a Red Riding Hood lane. Only the fairy tales receiving current (or imminent) treatment by Disney itself get so named.

I'm much more inclined to believe that Walt Disney named the castle such for personal and artistic reasons than for crass commercialism, especially since movies come and go. Disneyland, however, is forever.
