  • Disney+ impact on older IP in the parks

With Disney+ coming down the pipe there is also a massive need for content to fill the endless hours of streaming people expect for a monthly sub. We have already seen a lot of new things, as well as the removal of the vault system, meaning classics will be more readily available. On top of this there is always the chance that a lot of the older IPs from the 80s and 90s make a come back as well, maybe not in the same vein as Ducktales with full reboots, but certainly as accessible streaming options on Disney+.

All that being said, do you think the reawakening of these products will in turn extend the shelf life of some of the older attractions in the parks? For example, I know what Gadget's Coaster is referring to, but I bet almost everyone in that ride's target demographic has no clue. The same can be said for Tarzan's Treehouse as that attraction and film quickly move into their 30s; a well known entity but certainly a fading star. Disneyland is "not a museum" but keeping attractions around is also much cheaper than replacing. There is also something to be said for keeping some of the older character IPs around.

While I am sure this will not apply to every single more obscure entity in the parks I wonder which rides will have a bit of a renaissance as a result of some late night or suggested streaming content.

I'd love a new series on the original WED designers, and Disneyland design up through the '90s. Especially since many of the major Imagineers from the '80s and '90s are still around. If made by the right people, it could be an excellent series that helps the next generation have an appreciation for Disneyland that extends beyond the $20 popcorn bucket Disney is selling.

It's a good question. We can't know the answer, but we can be assured of the decision process: Disney will invest time and money in only those IPs which are already highly popular, highly adaptable to multi-platform synergy, and highly likely to turn a quick profit. Chapek, as head of Disney Parks and the Company's top consumer products marketing expert, will have the biggest say in it; Iger is likely to defer to him.

That's not always true for everything. The parks are certainly feeling that push, but other smaller passion projects are coming to creation. Ducktales on DisneyXD has now moved into a lengthy second season, it has no ride, minimal merchandising, and no major push but clearly has some money vested in it to make it go.

I think that is putting the cart before the horse. We don't what the entirety Disney is planning for Disney+ or if they will pull things off from time to time. So its hard gauge anything yet.

In addition, Disney Parks is normally one of the last ones to get to use IPs. It's more of a 'if it's sucessful in the long run, then it will get some parks involvenent in several years. To get a better idea, Big Hero 6, Zootopia and Moana are just NOW just getting theme park attractions(None of them in Anaheim, BTW), despite being released 3 or more years ago .

And that leads to the hardest IPs to use in the parks, TV Series, due to their longevity being hard to predict. This is why the Playhouse Disney show in DCA, has to be redone every several years.

Yes, Ducktales could become an Attraction, as it was an already established franchise. However any new original tv series have a harder chance to get into the parks than compared to Movies.

This is likely why we never got a Bueno Nacho Restaurant in Downtown Disney(Kim Possible reference.)

Ducktales at least has a legacy to adults as well as kids now. That being said, it's rough to make a ride out of it, because honestly, the best use of the IP in ride form would be pretty similar to "Temple of the Forbidden Eye", but with Ducktales characters in it.

I agree about the other segments, but for the domestic parks, Ducktales doesn't seem like a big enough profit generator to warrant an attraction. Maybe a parade entry or a temp "presence" a la Afternoon Avenue.

This has the potential to replace Pirates Lair at Tom Sawyer's Island as the best IP within an IP.

Just curious. Has Disney announced what will be available in Disney+? They say their entire catalog, but we know that won't be the case (Song of the South).

Also, are we going to get the original content, or the PC re-edit (Pecos Bill)?

Just wondering. Too many unknowns for me before I pull the trigger and order.

Starting in 1998, the masters of Pecos Bill for U.S. distribution had all the cigarette business removed. The chance that Disney+ will air the original version is practically zero. The only way to get the unedited version is to buy a VHS or Laserdisc of Melody Time, or a Region 2 DVD (and Region 2 player).

I wouldn't necessarily say that. Saludos Amigos was similarly edited in the late 1990s (specifically, a shot of Goofy smoking was digitally altered). However, the recent DMC blu-ray of the feature is uncut with Goofy fully enjoying his drag, and I think that this newer HD version is the one that is available digitally as well. For that matter, Make Mine Music, the film that arguably suffered the most from Disney's heavy-handed editing in the 90s, played uncut on my cable system's Disney on-demand section a few years ago. So, should Melody Time ever make a digital resurgence, my guess is the the film would likely be uncut, but I wouldn't guarantee that assertion either.

Agreed. In the 1990s, these films were still being treated as mass-market films so there was some "Think of the children" hysteria. Twenty years later, these films are now considered more the domain of the Disney scholar and enthusiast so the company isn't as concerned now. Of course, the executives that likely made these decisions are likely long gone. On the other hand, I wouldn't count on seeing an uncut Fantasia, but as much as I hate censorship the edit in that case is more understandable.

Yep. And even more influential on making classic Disney animation kid-safe was Michael himself. A former head of ABC Children's TV, he had barely moved into his office when he launched Disney TV Animation with a mandate to dominate kidvid. The Disney Channel was quickly kiddie-fied. Disney Home Video (later Disney Home Entertainment, which Bob Chapek headed for a time before he was promoted to Consumer Products) cranked out dozens of titles marketed to the kid demographic.

Michael is indeed long gone, but his marketing mindset remains in the executives he promoted -- Iger in particular. It'll be interesting to see how much it informs the Disney+ content.

Yes - posted today via the Disney+ Twitter account was a massive dump of everything which will be available at launch on November 12th. Sorted link here, breaking it down by "channel", if you will - Walt Disney Pictures, Direct-to-video/TV Movies, TV Series, Disney+ Originals, FOX, Nat Geo, Lucasfilm, Pixar.

                                        Disney+ Day one content

As a starting point goes, you'll definitely see a whole bunch of "deep cuts" from the vault to go with the greatest hits (if you wanted to compare both the 1940 and 1960 versions of Swiss Family Robinson, for instance, you're in luck!) while also tapping in heavy to peak-90s nostalgia (hence every Disney Afternoon & Marvel animated series under the sun, plus a whole plethora of the Disney Channel Original Movies that ruled cable in the late-90s). Worth keeping in mind that this is a) only what was announced today, which while big probably wasn't totally exhaustive, and b) a decent amount of stuff remains tied up in deals with other services so it might be a while before the streaming rights in the U.S. return back to Disney (most of the theatrical releases from 2016-18, for instance, are still with Netflix for a bit longer)

Added: if you prefer visuals and have 3 Hrs and 17 minutes to spare, the announcement clip reel in full (which might come in handy as there's a decent amount of material both recent and decades in the past that I had no idea existed!):
