  • Avengers Campus vs. SWGE

Battle of the "most immersive lands" ever!!!

Now that Disney has released video "confirming" the use of a stunt animatronic for the use in Avengers Campus and the addition of R2D2 to SWGE do you think more amazing entertainment offerings are coming to the resort? We all know how much Star Wars Galaxy's Edge had planned for entertainment, until Bob Cheapek inherited the project. R2D2 seems like he is proving to be very popular amongst guests at SWGE. With his success do you think we could see more droids roaming around Black Spire Outpost, here in Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland? I don't know if anyone has noticed, but it seems like they have extended Kylo Ren's atmosphere sets into the later part of the operating day as well. If Avengers Campus sees a positive impact with their entertainment do you think we could see additional entertainment added to SWGE that we have all ben waiting for? Walk around articulated aliens? More droids? An actual show? Who knows, it seems like they are heavily advertising Disney After Dark: Stars Wars Nite and they did debut March of the First Order at the last Star Wars Nite so maybe a new show will be debuted in SWGE for this years event?!? Do you think we are going to get the amazing entertainment in SWGE promised to us or do you think they will cheap out? Sound off down below and add any speculations and comments you may have!

I for one hope that it will happen and increase the entertainment in Galaxy's edge but I have no faith in Chapek being willing to pay for it.

I honestly have a bad feeling about the Avengers Campus(heh Star Wars joke). The Campus appears very tiny compared to Galaxy's Edge. Granted, GOTG will likely be 'relocated' to the land to make it bigger.

Even though I'm a MCU fan...I'm not as excited about the land as I should be. What's the draw to the land? What's the weenie? Are the stuntronics going to be in a show, or is it a passive decoration? Is WEB the actual name of thd Spider-Man ride? Or has Disney not chosen a name yet? Will it be referred to as the West Coast campus of the Avengers or is it standard Avengers 'Land'? WHEN IS IT GOING TO OPEN?

I honestly feel like I had a better grasp of what Cars Land, Galaxy's Edge and even Pixar Pier were going to be during the construction process, than I do with AC currently. And that is not a good sign, for someone who was actively following DCA 2.0 and was excited about the process.

Say what you will about GE, but I feel they put more time in the development and planning process than AC will actually get in the end.

I think Avengers campus is going to be super weak. The stuntamatronic looks amazing but it is one thing in the land. The ride and brewery just don't move me. Star Wars could use a lot of life injected into it. I have a feeling Avengers will suffer from the same blandness.

I share the same sentiment as many in the not really that excited about the Avengers Campus group. I am a 40+ years fan of Marvel I used to watch The Electric Company Edutainment show as a kid just for the glimpses of "Spiderman meets the..." segments they interjected from time to time. I have seen all the Avengers Movies and still I have yet to have a moment of "Cool, oooh or Wow" as I have followed the conceptual through the presentation and building of the land. When they announced the Spiderman ride details I was let down (another screen based shooter dark ride oh joy, meh) the size being so small also I think tends to be a bit of let down for such a huge IP.

I am still hoping I am wrong and I will find the Spidey ride amazing (zing!) and the land marvelous (here all the week) but my family as a whole is not excited. My girls have almost zero interest in the Avengers and lil interest in Marvel as a whole. They enjoy Star Wars they like Pixar ( thought they are getting over their movies as well ) They love original Disney Characters the most and I think they are far more stoked on the upcoming MMRR than anything else that has been announced. Disney needs to put more effort in their own original characters as I think most put them first in their desire when asking park goers and they seem to be getting washed out by SW, Pixar and Marvel.

Entertainment in the land isn’t the immersion problem so much as the aesthetic.

Star Wars has a few distinct aesthetics (Batuu’s rugged feel being just one) that come to mind. Even it’s criticism of just looking like wore-torn town in the Middle East, admits it looks exotic from a certain POV. It’s brand allows it to have old-world charm; the kind of charm where old things are damaged and dirty (too much so at points*) but that gives it an untold history and a feel that an item or building “has been there for ages”. This is a major part of immersion. There is a little creature in a cage with an old, chewed up Porg toy. This is a micro story that tells the audience/guest that the toy is loved and might be a favorite since the creature was a kitten. It’s not the entertainment that SWGE needs, but it’s a little detail that is so immersive and important.

NOS isn’t just immersive because it has live bands (though they add so much flavor and atmosphere). It’s also immersive because it is a little cluttered with old looking items in its balconies and windows. It gives one the feel that it has a colored history.

Potterland is not more immersive than SWGE because it has a frog choir, it is immersive because the shops are alive with movement from “enchanted” pieces. The village feels like it’s been around a long time because of the overgrown moss.

Marvel doesn’t really have that opportunity for a charming details. When I think of a distinct aesthetic from Marvel, I think of an industrial complex (I know there are some exceptions like Wakanda, but exceptions aren’t the rule are they?). The term “campus” implies that Imagineering is thinking the same thing. The problem is that industrial is purposely clean in a sterile way and too functional. While there can be bold artistic choices in architecture, it’s very aesthetic is anti-charm. An overly modern, simplified look likely will remove little details that would give the land charm. Entertainment won’t make up for these kind of details.

*Too much immersion for me in the bathroom with faux dirty stalls. Things can look worn but the stalls shouldn’t feel dirty.

One thing to add to my comment would be maybe instead of just saying black panther is coming they should have had the concepts presented already and they should have already been building it. That would help out the area. For all the money Marvel generates it really is getting zero love in the parks. The Main attraction is a re-skin that doesn't even face the area it belongs to. Once they move the Marvel characters meet and greets over there it will make the Hollywood back lot area deserted again. They really need to move forward with some sort of redesign of Hollywoodland.

Agreed, I actually hoped they would take the area from Monsters to the GofG to build the land there. I hoped they would not remove Bugsland as I always felt it was a great lil area for small children & families that should have never been removed.

Yes me too the entire area to bugsland would have been a great Marvel area. The tower faces into the area it would have worked great.

Seems to me TPTB they tend to move on to the 'next best thing' rather than improve what's already there.mor Sorta like "Well that didn't work like we thought it would. Hey, let's not bother with that anymore. Let's concentrate on the new shiny thing over there". So rather than invest further in SWGE they'll put that money into AC.

I fear Avengers campus is going to be Pixar Pier 2.0. With the amount of time they have been working on it and with the people running Disney, sadly I feel its almost a sure thing it will be weak. But I'd love to be wrong about it.

I'm so confused. Avengers Campus will have:

1 - Mission Breakout (already a super popular attraction)
2 - Spider-man ride (it will undoubtedly be popular)
3 - An Avengers E-ticket ride (will obviously be popular, but I get that it's part of phase 2, so maybe people aren't including it in their analysis??)
4 - Pym Test Kitchen (what a cool place to eat!)
5 - Doctor Strange Show (this should be cool to see......the concept art for the environment ALONE looks incredible)
6 - Spider-man stunt-tronic (this will be cool, especially for kids.....assuming it works and doesn't turn into another Expedition Everest Yeti situation)
7 - The Avengers show that will take place on and around the Headquarters building (this WILL be entertaining....especially for kids)

So why are so many being so pessimistic about this land? Popular rides and attractions typically aren't "not good." So what expectations will it not live up to?

It's not pessimism, it's realism. It's because of the track record of the executive who is calling the shots on what will be in the land -- and what won't. The major cutbacks on what was originally promised for Star Wars Land were just a warmup for what Cheaptastic Chapek is likely to do to Marvel Land.

^The pessimism probably stems from the fact that Disney does not always deliver on their plans. SWGE is an example of that: There was supposed to be a restaurant, roaming droids, and similar to the Avenger’s headquarters, shows with the buildings being the stage. Thus, from historical stand-point, Disney might not actually provide all the cool things you list. Even if Disney doesn’t cancel items, that doesn’t mean the final product will be as great as expected. For me, someone who likes SWGE, Oga’s was disappointment on various levels.

That being said, doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with looking forward to and being excited about what they have planned! Don’t let us get you down!

The Avengers E-ticket has gone through development he11, even before groundbreaking. The previous rumor was that Chapek turn down the ride proposal TWICE because he was 'unsatisfied' with the proposals. And because of that, the ride was delayed to after the opening of Avengers Campus.

I was more optimistic about this land before Hong Kong and Shanghai Disneyland were closed indefinitely. Now I get the feeling that a lot of this land’s entertainment is going to be cut with a meet-and-greet to fill the void.

But I could be wrong! 😬

I wonder what he wants a super more complicated attraction than ROTR? LOL Really if they cloned the Flight of Passage ride system and gave it a good story it would be an epic addition to DCA.
