  • One Year Ago Today

Exactly 1 year ago tonight, it was Friday, March 13, 2020. The last day of a fully operational Disneyland. Crazy to think that a year later, we are talking about the same thing we were talking about the last year at the same time. I can't believe it has already been a year.
By the time you see this, it will be a year since the 1st full day of Disneyland being "temporarily closed."

**Please avoid bringing up politics, this is intended to be a looking back thread where you can share your thoughts on that specific day and where we are now.**
The Never Spoken Dedication at the Opening of Pixar Pier:

The world you have entered was created by The Walt Disney Company and is dedicated to California—not a place on a map, but a
state of mind that exists whenever people seek nostalgia and wonder and imagine, a place where the original California Adventure vision and atmosphere are brought back to life by Pixar's vibrant color palette. We invite you to travel to a bygone era of the early 2000s at California Adventure and explore a land that never was, and always will be.

I was apart of the Disney College Program at Disneyland, which was supposed to last until the end of July. So as you can tell, it was a very unlucky time for sure, because not only did we lose Disney for a year, but for the college program, that meant us having to pack everything up and be moved out within a few days.

Crazy to think that Disneyland has been closed for an entire year.

Actually Disney DID choose to close. They were not mandated to close. California was not put on a stay at home order until March 20th 2020.

I'm still a bit burned out, as I arrived in California THE DAY BEFORE... But I do understand the need for the closure. I wound up never getting the chance to go to DCA. I also remember people standing in the long line for City Hall, just after closing. Even back then, I though that was pointless to do.

But enough of the Negative. The biggest surprise of that day, was the fact I was able to ride Rise of the Resistance! Even before my trip began and the announcement was made, I extremely doubted that I would get chance to ride because of the boarding process. And even though I didn't enter the park til after 10 AM, RESERVATIONS WERE STILL AVAILABLE. I got to ride shortly after 8PM later. Some of the other positives were meeting Mickey again at his house(never gets old) and going back-to-back on both sides of the Matterhorn via Single Rider.

The other positive side was that the hotels and Downtown Disney were still open throughout the weekend, which bolstered up my planned vacation.

I agree, I actually don't think they were ever FORCED to close. In fact, Disneyland was even given an EXEMPTION from Governor Newsom, as the shutdowns started taking place.

"At a news conference Thursday, Gavin Newsom said Disneyland and other large theme parks, theaters, and casinos are exempted from the ban against large gatherings of 250 people or more due to the “complexity of their unique circumstances.”

The parks were officially closed on Saturday. Downtown Disney and the hotels were still open.

Sunday, March 8th was my last day at Disneyland. Such a wild thought that it's been closed for so long. Had I known, I might have waited to watch Fantasmic instead of going home before 6PM.

I think time has definitely dulled the itch to visit, but I do hope that once things veer more towards normalcy, I can take a peek at the work that's been done like everyone else... and maybe ride ROTR for once?

We were planning on going that day and I had made reservations for my kids Flex passes we had gone on March 1st and were going to go early and make an effort to finally ride Rise of the resistance but that week we decided it was time to hunker down and not take any risks. I am just glad we finally have proper information, vaccines and proper management pushing things in the right direction now. We are not out of the woods yet but the light is starting to shine through the trees.
