  • The only real way to get rid of Chapek is to cancel your Disney+ subscription

Internet petitions are a joke. No one takes them seriously. Do you know what Disney shareholders do take seriously right now more than anything else? Disney+ subscriber numbers. The stock price rises or falls now based on the outlook of Disney+ subscriptions. The rest of the company is largely ignored by Wall Street. So do you want Chapek gone? Cancel your Disney+ account and don't renew it. When subscriber growth slows down, shareholders will demand change. If subscriber numbers start netting negative, Chapek will be gone. Instead of sharing "Sign this petition to fire Chapek," you should be sharing "I just canceled my Disney+ account and I won't resubscribe until Chapek is gone."

I just got the notice that my Disney+ was going to renew soon. I canceled it.

    This is the way.

I never subscribed due to the lack of Walt Disney library content.

I get D+ free as part of a package. If it wasn't free I certainly wouldn't pay for it. I don't know the 'technical terms' so I'll use mine; it's clunky and not well organized. Content can be hard to find and doesn't seem to load and play smoothly. I agree there are a lot of movies/shows missing that would be nice to have. I can't figure out why more of the old movies aren't on there like 'Summer Magic' or the rest of the Hayley Mills movies. It's not like those movies are going to be re-released to make money off of. Or maybe they are there, I just can't find them!

I can't cancel it because it'd also cancel a couple of streaming platforms (also free) in the package that I use all the time.

There was an article the other day that stock holders were unhappy at the declining rate of new subscribers and the loss of current subscribers since the ending of the marvel series and the Mandalorian. It will be interesting to see if the numbers jump up with Hawkeye coming soon. But you are correct in one thing, if numbers across all platforms begin to decline the hammer is much more likely to fall than because of an online petition. I think as the economy recovers from COVID it will be the real tell tell if his reign will be cut short or not.

I find lots of old movies, include "Song of the South" here https://archive.org/details/SummerMagic

I had to rent "The Boatniks" from....Amazon?? I think.

I, too, was disappointed that Disney+ didn't actually have the entire Disney library. I thought it was misleading that they said "all your Disney favorites" in commercials a couple years ago. Sorry, can't find the commercial, but I do remember that phrase. I was skeptical immediately when I heard that, but did a free trial to check it out.

No more Disney+ in our house! They market the Disney brand like a drug.

Anyone know where I could find "The Happiest Millionaire"? I used to listen to all these old records when I was a kid, and always wanted to actually see the movies...

Even if Disney+ has content that you want to watch, you have to decide whether you're willing to buy into it and continue enabling Disney. If you do, then you don't have much right to complain about the direction of the company. We only got here because people have been willing to pay more for a lower quality experience.

I actually wrote in the cancelation reason "I'm tired of Disney being political."

I don’t think the well-deserved firing hurt the platform.

Somehow I think this thread has more to do with losing a culture war than Disneyland and Chapek.

There's a big difference between beating lowball "expectations" and the current projected growth. A prominent stock analyst cut Disney's rating last week on slowed subscriber growth, causing investors to reevaluate current "expectations" and slamming the stock price. The article you linked is from a few months ago and doesn't reflect the current stock outlook.

It is in fact a crucial time for Disney+ subscriber growth and cancelations will hurt them.

Belittling the holocaust is not political. Thus firing human trash was a not a political move unless belittling the holocaust is something you believe your political party should stand for? Also, if you truly think it is political than you should not bring it up in this forum per the sign above.

I digress; all this is moot, considering none of this has any place on this forum to begin with.

Streaming is an entirely different monster than what others are minimizing it to be.

The slow growth in Disney+ subscribers is due to Disney not investing enough in global content (or the rollout is just painfully slow). The platform is competing with Netflix, which has already established creative relationships and productions (for cheaper) overseas and is investing in stories that appeal to a wide range of demographics.

Disney needs to break out of the "family-friendly" trenches rather than having all its eggs in the Star Wars / Marvel baskets (as fun as they are). While those brands are lucrative, those types of stories don't appeal to as many households as Disney might have hoped.

If Chapek is smart, he will begin pushing to invest in different types of narratives that appeal to a global audience, and he will offer EPs and directors the creative freedom to make compelling stories without executives kicking and screaming in the backseat. It's from my understanding that Disney has a tight grip when it comes to creative control, and in my opinion, that's also playing a role in the suffocation of Disney's streaming services.

I agree Chapek's job is tied to how Disney+ performs, but let's not think that his job is on the line due to culture wars.

Obviously, signing a petition to fire Chapek and cancelling one's Disney+ subscription are not mutually exclusive. One can do either or both -- along with other things, including selective or full boycotting of Disney-owned IPs and merchandise.

It’s free for us. There’s so many bundles and cheat plans out there.. I don’t know how any of it is really legal..

I pay Verizon for my iPhone and cell service. They give me free Dis, ESPN, and something else I forget.. Apple music(?)

This obviously inflates the figures, like Sirius radio did when car buyers were given the service for a free amount of months.

I know jack about the technicalities of this sort of thing, but if folks cancelled Disney+, wouldn’t they just give it away for free to save their numbers..? And around and round we go, with poorer quality at every free subscription, but the guys making the rules are the same guys printing free money and receiving their due paychecks.

My hot take to the OP's idea...is that I mostly disagree with the idea of a boycott. Could it work? Possibly, but there are some downsides:

                                        1. Unless you publicly announce (aka Social Media or an Email to Disney) your intention to boycott Disney+, the company won't know on why you are canceling or opting out. They may assume you canceled the service because of your financials, program quality/quantity or because you went to great beyond.

                                        2. The intent is misplaced. Why should the employees that work in the Disney+ faction of the company pay for Chapek's mistakes? Sure, Disney+ is one of Chapek's golden gooses, but he oversees other departments in the company. This reminds me of the questionable boycott that Disneyland's Union members attempted on...Toy Story 3's Oscar Nominations? (This not how you boycott your employer).

                                        3. This won't lead to the desire results. Guess who gets in trouble if Disney+ numbers tank? Chapek? Nope, everyone else will. Administrators in Disney+ will be fired for "underperforming". The company will make budget cuts, and leads to the canceling of some original programming. They could even go the dramatic route and pull underperforming content off the site and back into the Disney Vault.

                                        4. If Chapek is going to get fired, either there will need to be a major social discourse against him and/or multiple departments in thecompany are going to have to underperform. Take Eisner for instance, despite his brainchild of DCA underperforming immediately in 2001, he still kept his job. It wasn't until 2005, when Eisner was finally ousted. And by then, WDAS was suffering critically and financially, Pixar nearly departed for another studio, there were failed projects at ABC and Hong Kong Disneyland receiving criticisms and negative backlash.

I should point out as well, that it took Roy E. Disney 2 years to kick Eisner out. A dismissal of Chapek is not going to be simple thing.
