  • The greatest Disneyland land that was canceled: Indiana Jones and the Lost Expedition

Ran across this new article this morning and thought I’d share. I hate to be negative the day after Christmas, but this particular line is indicative of what Disney used to be and now what it has become:

“Disney was also considering a revamp of Adventureland, one of Disneyland’s original sections. Imagineers…were given no limitations and no budget — the goal was simply to create the coolest, best retheming imaginable.”

Some often blame imagineers for the lack of imagination and quality of new attractions, but I would say that when they are allowed — with no constraints — to do actual imagineering, the results are nothing short of awe.

Article can be found here: https://www.sfgate.com/disneyland/am...d-16714087.php
"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Disneyland proudly presents our spectacular festival pageant of nighttime magic and imagination in thousands of sparkling lights and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sounds. The Main Street Electrical Parade!"

I mean the land did get canceled due to budget concerns, so that mindset has been there for awhile now.

"I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are. "

Great shares. I think that was perhaps what I would truly consider beyond post-Walt, the ‘Go big or go home’ Golden Age of Imagineering, even the stuff that did not fully get realized.

When you look at that Indiana Jones and the Lost Expedition concept and other similarly proposed multi-integrated attraction concepts, especially like the initial plans for EuroDisney’s multi-attraction Discovery Mountain and Baxter’s Westcot cruise around the world show scenes, it was just such an awesome mind-blowing level of Imagineering ambition.

Makes one wonder, if the EuroDisney Resort had thrived and if Wells had lived, what the alternative version of those Disney Decade attractions might have been?

It really is a shame that EuroDisney tanked as hard as it did, because they spared no expense and built a BEAUTIFUL park that they lost a ton of money on initially. I can understand needing to tighten the purse strings for a bit after that, it's just a shame that "do it for cheap" just became the mantra going forward.
