many pirates, same faces?

I noticed while at the parks on Monday, that about 7 of the animatronics on Pirates use the same face mold with slight hair/facial hair modifications.

I do not have pics but I can list the pirates from memory

1. Sitting across from the auctioneer wearing a white bandana
2. Playing the banjo/guitar with 2 other pirates, a dog, and a donkey.
3. Leaning on a pole holding a torch
4. Arms wrapped around another pirate in the burning town scene.
5. All the way to the left of the jail scene
6. The captain shooting across the water as the boats go up the lift near the end
7. The pirate leaning on the cannon, who is ironically shooting at the captain with the same face.

This is the 1st time ive noticed this after all of the hundreds of times I've visited Disneyland. I am wondering if anyone else noticed this, and why would imagineers do this? Was it difficult to construct different face molds at the time?

I 've noticed it before. It was done to save a buck or 2. You can see some of the same faces elsewhere too, like the Haunted Mansion.

I'm pretty sure this is mentioned in at least one of the Disney behind the scenes videos. The clip I recall mentioned the re-use of faces in Pirates but did not mention their use in HM but since it was being built around the same time that would make sense.

I think it was also mentioned that one of the pirates in the jail cell is modeled after Sid Caesar but I've never been able to decide which one he is.

I actually have a picture of several of the imagineers working on the POTC AA's back when they were building it and the AA looks exactly like one of the Imagineers.

It can get quite expensive to make a plaster face cast, then create a mold for the plastic/rubber material, then fill the mold and let it set, pull it out, paint it, etc... and do that each time for each pirate so they are all individuals. Much easier to change the appearance by hair/makeup and repeat a few of them. Saves time as well as money.

I'm pretty sure all of the AA's in HM use the same faces as PotC. The guy wearing the crown is the old man sitting on the rocking chair in the beginning of PotC for instance.

Both duellers in the Ballroom of HM are pirates. I believe there's a picture in Jason Surrell's Pirates book. (Or was it in the HM book?)

(1995) NO I don't miss it, it was too apt ot scare people and I think I disenjoyed the rest of the ride from that part on because it had stole the joy of it from me in that breif moment of panic. That was a bad idea...

The skull and crossbones are still in DL's POTC. I would really like for the heat to come back to Pirates. It's a fire, it's suppose to be hot. Also, rides are suppose to give you joy through thrills, and heat during a fire amps up the thrill factor.

I was convinced the part where you go through the burned-out... uh... place? Anyway, I was so sure that table was gonna fall on me. As a kid, at least.

I haven't noticed any of this stuff... Haha, I'm oblivious.
