The Proud Bird Restaurant in Los Angeles
Anyone ever try the aviation themed Proud Bird restaurant outside LAX?

It looks very cool. The website doesn't give me a feel for it either way.

    Re: The Proud Bird

I really really want to go there!
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

I went there for dinner once in 1984 (give or take a year or two). The fact that it's still there makes me think it might have decent food. Sorry I can't give any more insight. I tried to remember something about the food, but I can't. That's a pretty good sign too though, since bad experiences really stay in my mind a long time.

Last time I was there was in the mid 90's for Easter I believe. From what I can remember, it is a really cool old airman's club. Old aviation pictures all over the wall, old and musky but not uncomfortable, and then the really cool part of being able to pick up a pair of headphones and listen to the air traffic controllers talking to the pilots.

Don't know how much has changed since then, but it was definitely interesting. Here's the Yelp listing for Proud Bird: Proud Bird Restaurant - Westchester / LAX - Los Angeles, CA

Or, you could always check out the 94th Aero Squadron. Same idea as Proud Bird, but it butts up against the Van Nuys airport. No big planes there, but plenty of small privately-owned single engines coming and going. 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant - Lake Balboa - Van Nuys, CA

Many thanks for all the responses! I am intrigued by 94th Aero Squadron!

If I go to either I will make sure to post a review here.

              Re: The Proud Bird

I've been there quite a bit, but not in a year or so. They used to have free food during their happy hour, but I believe that is no longer.

The food is average but you're really there for the ambiance. The dining room has large picture windows with virtually no window panes. It's on the approach end of the southern runways, and you literally are as close as you can be to watching planes coming in for a landing.

My little secret: upstairs is a banquet room that I haven't seen used much. I go up there every trip for a few minutes, because it gives you just enough height to be able to see all of the taxiways and to see the jets land. Fascinating at dusk.

I highly recommend going to this place, just once. Just to see everything they have on the walls and all of the planes outside.

I've never eaten there, but I go there once a week for a training seminar through my job and the place is BEAUTIFUL. The two reception halls that are used have huge glass chandeliers, all carpet, wood paneling.... It's just really pretty.

There's a ton more planes... that's just a sampling. Worth the trip! Especially if you're into old planes!

Neat looking restaurant. When I am down there for our trip I am planning on renting a 172 and flying from John Wayne airport to Van Nuys airport so I can add them to my log book. I might have to see about stopping at the 94th for a Coke.
