  • Santa Monica: Paradise?

... or homeless haven? Reading internet reviews can leave one with either/both opinions. We're considering staying there for spring break. What's your opinion? Are the streets paved with gold, or lined with bums?

    Re: Santa Monica: Paradise?

Santa Monica is one of my all time favorite cities, yes there are homeless at the pier and on the boardwalk, but they have become part of the local landscape along side the skaters, musicians, locals and tourists. I lived in Santa Monica for over a year (and part of that was out of my 69 VW bug). Even at it's worst I never felt I was in any danger. Albeit I always made sure I was aware of my surroundings as you would in any other big city.

The last time I was there was two years ago, and I was amazed how little has changed since I lived there 20 years ago. My aunt still lives just blocks from the beach, with a beautiful view of the ocean.

There are a lot of homeless people there. They did not bother me at all. I stopped going when i different demographic started hanging out there. It may be better now. i haven't been in years. It was a fun place to go.

I shied away after the german tourist was killed by a gang member and then I started noticing a rougher crowd around there so I stopped going. Like I said I haven't been in about 10 years. No desire to go back...

        Paradise!
There are homeless all over L.A.
I'd live in Santa Monica if I could afford it.
        Good morning, son
        In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
        It was pain
        Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

We just got back, and my vote is ... paradise! The beach next to the pier is so deep! The water was freezing, but hey - the view and the sand and the beautiful weather made up for it. We didn't really have amy "bum-moments" - our biggest gripe was with parking. Thankfully Santa Monica has lots of parking garages, since on-street parking was never available. I'll post some pics soon. Thanks for the advice!

We probably saw more policemen/women than homeless. Ok exagerating, but anywhere that the public were out-and-about (beaches, the Pier, the Promenade) so were the police. We never felt unsafe.

I really like it because you get both the city and the beach in a weird combination that is really unique. Glad you had a good time!

Pics! We rented a boat at Marina Del Rey and got these Santa Monica shots from the water.

                    WOW!!! Great photos!!

I'm glad you had a good time. Like I said before, it's one of my favorite cities in the world.
I remember meeting Steve Martin and Martin Short, Chuck Norris, Jane Fonda (who lived a couple of blocks away at the time), Harold Ramis and many others at the pier when I lived In Santa Monica.

The last time we were their, it was packed with people, I was driving Herbie, and my wife and I were going to grab something to eat, but we couldn't park and get out due to the mob that Herbie drew on the pier. We had to stash the car and come back.

I'm glad to hear it's gotten better. Maybe I'll give it another try one day. It has been over 10 years since I've been.

I havent been in a long time but Hubby and I did go to the pier on our 2nd date (in December 1995). It doesn;t seem that long ago but I guess it was. Brady Rymer played a free show there a while back and I really wanted to take the kids, but it was too early.

Glad to hear its nice, hopefully I can take the kids there this summer.

                          A little piece of heaven
