  • WDW Monorail System: Original cost?

In your piece about Monorail myths, you address the myth of the cost of the monorails, and why they are too expensive for Disney to construct in today's dollars. This is a favorite topic amongst Disney nuts..."why doesn't Disney build more monorails?"

But my question is this: How was the Walt Disney Company able to afford/justify building the original WDW monorail system??? Is there any record of the original system cost in 1971 dollars?

I would love to know more about the process that went into the tremendous infrastructure investments made in WDW. Surely, it wasn't all just based on Walt's grand intentions. Who approved such a large capital expenditure?
