  • Ford's Motorway from NY Fair--why not imported to DL?

I was recently cleaning up all my Disney memorabilia and found a copy of a souvenir restrospective magazine WED/WDI did in 1984 that was sent to me as a teen in the early 90s when I wrote WDI with questions about the Fair rides--they said they had a few copies of the magazine left so really kindly sent me one (it was a magazine just done for internal company distribution)

A special 20th retrospective of the fair and its impact on Disney

Anyway the full Ford Motorway ride sounds fantastic--perhaps, to me, the most interesting of the four exhibits Disney did for the fair.

So one thing I've never read a clear explanation about--why wasn't the full ride incorporated to DL? Certainly with the future city segment it woulda fit in at DL--instead only the dinosaurs--not even the cavemen just were transported to the train at DL. Was it because Ford didn't wanna bring the ride to DL? no room?

It sort of was. The technology used to run the Magic Skyway went into the PeopleMover. Apparently the Progress City model at Magic Kingdom is the same as the one from the Fair and used to sit on the second floor of the Carousel building at Disneyland. Another factor seems to be that Ford did not wish to continue its sponsorship of the attraction. So bits and pieces were sent here and there.

Right I think Progress City was even part of the People Mover, in the Carousel building in 1992 the last time I rode the PMover... Still too bad--it seems an ace ride, but it does also seem like a very big spiritual forerunner for many EPCOT rides

To add to my own thread, I was recently re-reading the E Ticket Magazine article on the old Inner Space ride and realized this obviously owes a lot to the Ford ride as well

I wonder if any film was ever taken of the full ride

FOrd decided not to sponser the Magic Skyway at Disneyland because it was promoting an alternitive to the motor car, not good buisiness sence. Walt also felt that the human audio-animatronics were not up the the Disney standard. So, Disneyland got the Dinosars and the ride system that became the PeopleMover.

The Progress City Model was built for the Carousel Of Progress in 1967 for the New Tomorrowland. The GE Pavillion at the New York Worlds Fair was called Progressland. It was a three story pavillion, you entered the pavillion on the second floor which was the carousel theater. After the show, you went to the third floor to the Skydome Spetacular, then decended to the first floor for "A actual demomstration of atomic energy", and the GE Medalion Home Display.
            Hope this clears everything up
