  • News Two injured in fire at Disney's Hollywood Hotel

    From SCMP:

A fire broke out at Disney’s Hollywood Hotel on Lantau Island on Friday afternoon – injuring two maintenance workers.
A Fire Services Department spokesman said it had received a report on the fire at 12.13pm.

At the hotel, firemen found smoke coming out of a meter room on the hotel roof.

They used a water jet and breathing apparatus to combat the blaze.

The fire was extinguished at 12.50am. Around 200 people, including visitors and performers at the theme park, were evacuated.

Two maintenance workers were burnt earlier as they were trying to extinguish the fire. They received burns to their faces and hands. Both were rushed to Queen Mary Hospital.

Au Ka-choi, divisional commander of the Fire Services Department, New Territories South West Division, said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.

“The two workers were using a drill while doing their work. It is suspected the fire started because of a short circuit – or improper use of the electrical apparatus,” Mr Au ventured.

“We are still investigating the cause.” he added.

The hotel occupies a nine-storey building located near Hong Kong Disneyland. Some people in the hotel complained its fire alarm system had only rung on the 8th floor. The fire broke out on the roof, local media reported.

A Hong Kong Disneyland spokesman said the hotel had complied with the Fire Services Ordinance, which states that only one floor below and two floors above the fire site need to be evacuated.
