  • [Rumor] New Hotel for HKDL?

I forgot to mention this the other day, but Blue Sky Disney did a post talking about a new Disney themed hotel which would open with the current expansion. Interesting. I wonder what it will be themed to?

I think HKDL needs to expand even more and ensure attendance increases adequately before they should add another hotel.

EDIT: Perhaps I should have read the article first. It seems occupancy is high, but can they fill another hotel with the expansion planned? I know planning ahead is important if they add a second park, but the focus should be the park first and foremost.

I am thinking they will be able to handle three hotels. I had read that article myself and I was really excited about it.. Sounds like the new hotel is going to be pretty sweet.

I would love to see a Newport style hotel similar to the Beach or Yacht Club. It would compliment the existing Victorian and Hollywood themes perfectly, as well as fitting the seaside location. I believe they still want to keep their Disneyland Hotel as the flagship of the resort and hence, will try not to outdo its elegance and luxury with the new hotel.

Well yeah, reading the article would help, but another hotel is quite possible without even thinking of a second park. A second park is way far away. The original one has to be a true success first. Disney has an option that talks about a second gate has to be approved by 2013, that doesn't mean built, but at least planned. I don't even think they'll have it ready by then. My guess is they'll ask for an extension. The soonest we'll see a second Disney theme park is something like 2016-18 at the earliest.

And even then, I'm guessing it will be a Studios-style park. They would probably justify it by tying it with their Hollywood Hotel. )

Well, that's Eisner thinking there. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt right now about just cloning something from the 80's and 90's. I'm curious to see what Iger's Shanghai Disneyland will look like. It'll be his first real test.

I'm sure the Imagineers could build something quite original and if you've seen that preliminary overhead view of HKDL, the other park looks nothing like a studio park. Now, I know that is was just concept and not based on anything they're putting in, but I have a feeling they could make something quite different. Maybe take the Discovery Bay concept and expand it out from a proposed land to an entire park? Now THAT would be cool.

This is not the first time they talked about building a third hotel. The two hotels have been enjoying occupancy rates at 80% or more for sometime. They really can do with a third one. Families that visit Hong Kong now all visit the park and the majority spend a night there, while spending other nights in town.

I think something along the lines of Disney's Wilderness Lodge would work. Many consider DWL to be the best of WDW's luxury hotels...so there is a good template...and the theme would tie with the Grizzly / Mystic expansions. The theme is also sufficiently different from the Disneyland Hotel's that even if it were as luxurious, it would provide an alternate experience. Finally, from a "geographic" standpoint...I think it would be appropriate between the "east-coast" Victorian and "west-coast" Art Deco.

For a less expensive alternative along the same lines, the Sequoia Lodge at DLRP might be a good model.

What concerns me is from reading the blog is that Disney seem to be focasing more on expansion for the Resort instead of concentrating on the park. I'm sure HKDL doesn't want to miss out on opportunity's to make more money, but the mind frame I see to get from the Imagineers I spoke to at the D23 Expo and the general impression is that Disney and the Hong Kong Govement feel this newest expansion for the park is going to be enough. No doubt the park will see a nice attendance spike after each new land opens but this is also not going to be enough. The Downtown Disney area makes no sense to me, because once the park closes most people realise they probarely have a 40-60 minute train or car journey home and leave straight away.

                        Not bad.

But "something that will please Disney fans" had me thinking it would be more of a fantasy themed hotel. Something like "Pirates of the Caribbean Resort". Something more like a Disneyfied Vegas casino but without the gambling. I don't know, it seems the Disney branded hotels are too contemporary and it would be more fun to stay in Hong Kong and take the train or boat to the parks every day.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went for a more characters-specific theme similar to what the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel did with its character rooms. A Fantasia theme could work for example.

In the Master Layout map of the Resort that is in the Making Of book (and was somewhere online as well), you can clearly see that there are planned expansion wings for both of the hotels. Since I couldn't find it online I made this version of what it shows.

You'd think they build these wings before a 3rd hotel, but who knows.

No because those hotels seem far flung. Tied together with a superior Downtown Disney (evocative of the Bradbury Building) with charm (New Orleans Square style layout) - it would seem a lot more exciting to stay there and walk over to the park.

The rumor was that HK govt nixed the idea of a Pirates e-ticket because it offended some sensibilities that I couldn't quite understand...something to do with Hong Kong history? Would similar logic, if true, also stand in the way of Pirate themed hotel?

I agree that a fantasy-themed hotel would be more fun. But not sure how well it would sit between the Victorian and Deco hotels that are there.

As for the DTD, I think it's a good idea if there are enough hotel guests. Locals are most likely to catch the ferry or train for the long ride home.
