  • [Other] Hong Kong is preparing for the rise in Visitors to the region

HKDL and HKOP are both undergoing expansion.

Recent new Tourism related development in Hong Kong, such as HK$21 billion WKCD (West Kowloon Cultural District), Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, etc., are in the pipeline.

5 New MTR Lines are underconstruction or to be constructed (HK West island line, HK South island line, Shatin-Central Line, Kwun-Tong Line Extension and Express Rail [China Bullet Train])

Construction of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Mega Bridge to begin soon (probably end of 2009)
Once completed, it will link up Hong Kong with Macau and Zhuhai.
More Mega resorts development coming to Macau.
Plus a RMB10 billion Ocean Resort (with theme parks) at Zhuhai, 1st phase of the Mega Ocean Resort to be completed by 2011.

Hong Kong International Airport to undergo further expansion as well.

Hong Kong airport is planning (midfield expansion) to build a new concourse, more aircraft stands and expand its apron so it can increase capacity.

That's why HKOP and HKDL are both planning to build new hotels and/or retail district.

Honestly, apart from HKOP expansion and HKDL expansion, I am not too excited.

Singapore's Sands Casino opens next year, Disney's Lion King will be staged there from Sept 2010. I wonder why HKDL cannot build a theatre at the resort and house a Disney Theatrical show? It would make so much sense.

I totally agree with you, Asa. If Disney were to build a theatre in the rumoured Downtown Disney, it will be a very good reason for guest to spend more time at the resort.

The attractiveness of Disney's Lion King at Singapore Marina Bay Sands in 2010 is very limited.

Festival of Lion King has been showing in HKDL for over 4 years now. Although it might be a different version at Singapore Sands, still it is more or less a variation of HKDL's version. If Disney is letting Singapore Sands to have this show, a new show might be heading to HKDL.

        LOL

Disney could build a theatre at HKDL and then show "Little Mermaid", "Mary Poppins", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Tarzan", "Beauty and the Beast", "High School Musical", ...etc etc. All these shows are Disney properties yet I don't remember them ever being on show in HK. Disney Theatrical is not a one trick pony.

Then Singapore came to recruit stage performers from the Hong Kong Performing Arts institute!!! HKDL is clearly wasting space and wasting talent.

100% true but HKDL doesn't need a new show for at least 5 years. a new show or even multiple shows won't drastically affect the number of people coming to the park whereas a new ride or rides would. If they did add a new show it would be a waste of time and money which is worse than wasting talent. Only more quality rides can save this park and Disney knows that.

Don't forget Macau already has Cirque Du Soleil "ZAIA" at Venetian Macau and Macau is not that far from Hong Kong.

and a Frank Dragone water themed Show is coming to Macau City of Dreams in 2010, the show will be housed in a 2,000 seat theatre with an impressive pool.

and Giant Wave Pool, a beach comprising
350 tonnes of white sand, lush gardens and water falls at Macau Galaxy (Mega Galaxy Cotai) to be opened at Spring 2011

The hotel at Macau Galaxy looks very arabian or middle east style.

Hopefully, the design of the 3rd hotel at HKDL will be something special.

These are circus shows not musicals. They are not the same thing, although many elements are crossing over nowadays.

Hong Kong theatre has been struggling to find suitable performing venue for years and that's why the debate about the West Kowloon Cultural district. But Disney can just open one at HKDL, even when it doesn't run its own shows, it can lease to other local theatre groups.

I just went to Macau and saw the Galaxy Resort. It is a huge place behind the Venetian. But it looks far from being built and Galaxy Group itself is not optimistic it will be completed soon in a recent news report. There are just far too many casinos now in Macau. There are more casinos than 7-Elevens in Macau today.
