  • [Pictures] Original Plan for HKDL

Here is an imagineering map of what was orginal proposed for HKDL. Really interesting. I mean, a boardwalk?
Anyway, if you want to read it, I added a few more observations about it on my blog here.

Hey- what did I do wrong? Why didn't my image upload? Don't you just click the photo icon then insert the code? Sorry, never did this before.

That would have actually been a beautiful park. I wouldnt mind if they closed HKDL for like 10 years to acomplish that! as long as they dont build it on the stupid. For instance, The hotel would have limited the area for expanding "Land of Discovery." The lagoon was pretty and i would like it- as long as the water was blue and not the mucky green that the moats are. I dont quite like the "boardwalk" idea though. It would have it doesnt fit a castle park imo. The "cupped in a hill concept, is pretty but lomits the park. They need to learn that ToonTown is much more than Roger Rabbit. An impotant question is, Whats taking the castles spot? just a bar? and is the castle still a weenie? Would it have been explorable?

Now that i look at it summore, Agrabah in fantasyland? and a villains area next to toontown? Weird but again, if they built it correctly in real life it would have been amazing! Shanghai possibly? I hope not, they should get a fresh start in Hong Kong

In this case we can say Disney tried their best for HKDL. It was the Government that ruined the park which now Disney is surprisingly maintaining to high standards to save face in China for a Shanghai DL.

I'd love to see more concept art for this park.
That said, cannot wait for Mystic Manor!

In fact if they build the park under this concept art, then HKDL will not have the special theme areas[Grizzy trail] and [mystic manor] , so its not really bad that they don't follow the original plan.

HKDL has suffered ALOT from the way it was built. The plan looks like a different take on the classic disney themepark setup and it has many more rides and things to see and do than HKDL ended up with. The new lands are not as good as other typical Disneyland lands. One ride per land is not enough! Even after the expansion HKDL will be small and lacking alot of what makes Disneyland Disneyland.

While the press-release park (circa 1999) was certainly bigger and grander than what was built, there were other, smaller iterations considered.

I transcribed this site plan from the Making of HKDL book... and you can see that it is even smaller than what opened in HK:

We are never going to go back to whatever early plans that they have. I just hope they keep on building up the current one and draw up some fantastic plans for the 2nd gate.
