Re: Monster on Mainstreet
ORDDU: That's what my sisters and I expected when we first heard that Hong Kong would be getting a Disneyland park, calvakasc, duckling. But, then, we never really liked that cover over Tokyo's Main Street. Even though it serves a most practical purpose, it detracts from the beauty of their Main Street--in our humble opinions. So we're actually glad that Hong Kong didn't do this same thing with their Main Street. Now it's a matter of making certain, ugly compromises. So, yes, Timmy, Dear, that's what our suspicion is about this cover--that it's being added for weather protection. Isn't there another restaurant further down HKDL's Main Street that also has a similar weather protecting cover?

Re: Monster on Mainstreet
That monstrosity was not always there.
Here are some pics from either 2009 or 2011hotos by Robert TG.
I didn't take those pics or post them.
The original shade structure was well themed and actually looked good!
Hopefully the monster is very temporary. Who thought that would be ok?!Last edited by MickeyMaxx; 06-27-2012, 11:06 PM. Reason: Link to non partner site replaced with original photos and credit to the photographer.

Re: Monster on Mainstreet
I think we have to wait until it's completely finished before passing judgment. If the steel is painted white and some decorative trim is put on it, it will look appropriate to the era.
Still, it does look like an elephant shoehorned into a frog's rectum.Born in a shoebox and making the most of it.

It's really sad to see those beautiful buildings being torn down. They were the final works of John Hench. John Hench was responsible for tuning the colours in Main Street U.S.A., Hong Kong Disneyland before he passed away in 2004. This video not only serves as a record of the changing in Hong Kong Disneyland, but also a tribute to the Disney Legend who gave this town a finishing touch with his magical brush.

Welcome to MiceChat, HKMSGEditor! Love your blog, there aren't a lot of opportunities on the net for current updates from HKD, so I referenced yours a lot in planning my trip out there last month.
Keep us up to date, if you'd be so kind, as to how the new 'monstructure' turns out!Forget 'Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln,' Samantha Brown is Disney's most sophisticated animatronic.
