LegCo document about HKDL. The funding for the third hotel is being discussed and voted on today.

    http://rthk.hk/rthk/news/expressnews...0224&55&987163

It is in Chinese but it basically says that the LegCo has voted in support of the third hotel. You can plan your trip now.

The LegCo interestingly asked about phase 2 development and the HKTB replied that they are in constant discussion with TWDC about developing the remaining plots of land in phase 1 and are in preliminary discussions about phase 2.

Due to the recent success of the park, the notification period for phase 2 land development is now earlier than originally planned.

Panel gives nod on Disney hotel loan

      Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Hong Kong Disneyland's plan to build a third hotel at a cost of HK$4.26 billion has cleared the first hurdle.

The project, with an HK$800 million loan from the government, will provide 750 rooms and increase the Lantau theme park's hotel capacity to 1,750 rooms.

The hotel is expected to be finished by early 2017, to meet the expected demand following the 2016 completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. At the Legislative Council's economic development panel meeting yesterday, managing director Andrew Kam Min-ho said that the room rates will be around HK$2,000 to HK$3,000, which is between the rates of the two existing hotels.

Some lawmakers were concerned as to when discussions between the government and the Walt Disney Company on the park's second phase of development would commence.

But Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Andrew Wong Ho-yuen said discussions on the usage of the remaining land of phase one development, as well as initial talks on the second phase development are ongoing.

The panel endorsed the hotel funding. Meanwhile, the government will ask the Legco Finance Committee in May to approve the additional loan to Disney. BEATRICE SIU

ORDDU: There's another thread, here, which makes it sound as though they're coming very close to deciding what the second phase park should become. I don't understand why it is taking them so long to make up their minds about that.

The original agreement allows Disney to take up to as far as 2029 to decide whether to take up the land or not, let alone build anything on it.

Now the HK govt said they have sped up the agreement, that may just mean 2025 or if we are very lucky, 2020, when Disney makes a decision.

Personally I believe nothing will be done until 2020 and no second gate until 2023. At least.

As for the theme, I doubt it will matter. Because we know what Disney will build: Star Wars Land, Marvel Land, Avatar Land, A Pixar-franchise Land... etc. Just follow Bob Iger's list of purchases.

(Star Wars Land could appear in HKDL if episode VII does well in the box office, but that would mean Star Tours and Stark Tours in the same park. So I guess it will be moved to the second gate.)

The hotel building reminds me of Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort.

            Now look at this:

            Looks cheap to me.

Don't get me wrong. I believe the interior design of the new hotel will be just as good as those of AKL and Aulani. What I was trying to say was that the facade looks dull and uninspired. Perhaps Joe's comment on Disney and more can explain further.

The exterior in the art does look more Aulani or Villas at the Grand Floridian (a basic skin on an otherwise generic hotel).

The hotel is still waiting for HK govt's financial approval. It is nothing to do with the plan or anything, it is just the filibustering of some of the radical democrats that led to the delay. Other projects like the new incinerator's funding is also being held up.

If the funding is not approved before the summer break (July), then the project could suffer some delays.

I still don't get why a theme park that attracted 7.4 million guests last year needs third hotel. They should build the second theme park first. People only stay at a hotel if there is a multi-day experience, which is not always the case for people visiting HKDL. To compare the other Disney resorts with 2 parks, DLR has 3 hotels for 20.7 million guests, TDL/TDS have 3 Disney owned hotels for 31.3 million guests, and DLP/WDS have 7 hotels for 14.9 million guests (but their attendance was higher and has been plummeting).

It really doesn't have much to do with the Park's admission numbers. Simply is the two current hotels are at and extremely high occupancy rate year round. A third will be the same, and they are cash cows for HKDL

Two things, first as bigglesworth003 said, HKDL's two hotels are near capacity and it is big business for HKDL to make one more hotel.

Second, you said TDR has only 3 Disney-owned hotels, that's true, but there are 5 more official hotels on site and numerous good neighbour hotels nearby. Same for DLR, lots of people stay in nearby hotels actually. HKDL has no other hotels on site. There is only one good neighbour hotel in Discovery Bay and it is still half an hour's drive away and you cannot drive to Discovery Bay (bus and ambulance only).

If someone stays in a hotel to visit a Disney Park, if the stays in a Disney hotel, Disney makes more money. That is why WDW guest revenue is huge per guests compared to any other resort. At WDW they stay onsite and Disney gets the hotel revenue, and since they aren't leaving to get to their hotel they get revenue from selling 3 meals per day. That is why WDW has free transportation from the Orlando airport, so they can capture the guests. Captive Customers means more revenue because you sell them necessities and can charge more.

This is why Shanghai is building hotels right off the bat as did HKDL, DLP,TDL, and WDW after Disney made the mistake building DL with no hotels.

Yes, but people usually only stay at a Disney hotel if they are there for a lengthly period of time (2+ nights). Otherwise, they usually stay at a hotel that is in the middle of everything so they can stay in one place for their entire vacation. WDW makes a ton of money off hotels because they have 4 parks and 2 water parks which can allow guests to stay for 7+ days and not leave the resort.
