The govt is carrying out a study on Sunny Bay reclamation to turn the area into a shopping, entertainment and commercial hub.

This will be done to satisfy the ever-growing shopping demands of the mainland tourists, who are supposed to increase with the opening of the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai mega bridge in 2016.

If Sunny Bay becomes a new shopping area, then it might have an impact on WDC's plans to develop Downtown Disney at HKDL itself.

Re: Sunny Bay reclamation to become new commercial district

The following pic is the Concept Plan or artist's impression of HKDLR and surrounding areas (including the proposed Entertainment Hub at Sunny Bay) released many years ago. you can still see there is a highway or railway line linking sunny bay across the water (probably to Tuen Mun).

There is a new proposal by Mr. Michael Tien ( former chairman of KCRC (now part of HK MTR), member of Legislative Council, etc.) to build a new railway line (Probably operated by MTR) to run from HK Station to the proposed man made island (sitting in the water between HKDL resort and West of HK Island) and extending to Sunny Bay and terminating at Tuen Mun.

This New Proposal matches the transportation link in the picture.

This is just terrible news about a plan that I never hopes becomes reality.

Hong Kong Disney Water World sounds like a terrible idea.Worst suggestion since WDS in Paris! Just build a DisneySEA! Even if they build a DisneySEA that is only half as good as the one in Tokyo it would still be a hundred times better than any other themepark in China.

They also mention making a little Pataya in Hong Kong. First of all, the water in Hong Kong is dirty and nasty most of the year when compared to Thailand. Pataya is a nasty place place in Thailand where people go to buy sex from underaged and transvestites. It is also one of the main sources of HIV in Scandinavia.

The people that are making these plans do not know good from bad entertainment.

...all this at the cost of Hong Kong's marine life.

Re: Sunny Bay reclamation to become new commercial district

Apparently these people have no taste at all. I can't think of any tackier names than Hong Kong Disney Water World. And I don't see the need to reclaim land to accommodate mainland tourists. Heck, most of them aren't even tourists but milk formula smugglers.

TimmyTimmyTimmy, I concur with the idea of building DisneySea as the 2nd gate for Hong Kong. Can't go wrong with that. What I'm afraid is the greenlight of the proposed East Lantau Metropolis will block the seaview the resort enjoys.

The following is a pic depicting a model of "East Lantau Metropolis" in the 80's. It was part of the "Rose Garden Project" conceived by the HK Government in the Colonial Era ( before 1997 the handover of HK to china)

In the pic, Penny's Bay not yet reclaimed, since the model was made in the 80's.
HK Government is dusting off an old colonial plan.

Whoever came up with this plan clearly doesn't know a thing about business. Like Disney would actually end up doing this.

Disney owns practically half the resort and I'm quite sure they won't throw money on something like this, especially considering how HKDL development has been on a roll as of late.

This will never happen. No one could take that offensively terrible PDF seriously as a proposal. It looks like a submission for a Year 9 business class in high school, even then it would get a D-.

I especially love the hack photoshop job comprising of the 50th Disneyland Castle, Disneyland Paris' Car park entrance, Tokyo Disneyland's Floral entrance Mickey from the 25th Anniversary, HKDL Main Street, and a terrible Water parks slides.

The picture of the slides by the gates are just ment as an illustration.
Let's not forget that HKDL was built. It was a terrible plan that nobody ever liked and the park suffers from it today. Even though HKDL is making money, any future expansion means that they have to move or demolish ALOT to shoehorn in new rides.

ORDDU: Considering how difficult it is to get the Hong Kong government to approve anything new for HKDL, I doubt there will be that much more of an expansion for the park. They still have some areas that are vacant--

Document (HK Gov) for Environmental Impact Assessment On Sunny Bay Development Project reveals that Sunny Bay should be developed as a Major Tourism Area, with an international theme park at Penny’s Bay as a focus and compatible tourism and recreational uses in the vicinity.

north-east Lantau should be developed as a major tourism area, with an international theme park at Penny’s Bay as a focus and compatible tourism and recreational uses in the vicinity.

Environmental Impact Assessment will be completed sometime in 2016/2017 and Reclamation will start in 2018 (provided everything goes smoothly according to plan)
