  • Lawmakers Question Disney on Hong Kong

    http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/050316/hong_...neyland_1.html

    Quote from article:
HONG KONG (AP) -- Lawmakers on Wednesday questioned The Walt Disney Co.'s 20-year option to buy a 54-hectare (130-acre) site near Hong Kong Disneyland, saying the government should consider letting other theme parks use the land.

"From Hong Kong's standpoint, it doesn't necessarily have to be Disneyland. Other than Disneyland, there are many other theme parks popular in the world," opposition lawmaker Sin Chung-kai said at a legislative hearing on Hong Kong Disneyland, due to open Sept. 12.

What?! Have they never been to WDW or even TDLR or, ahem, DLR and DCA? More than one Disney park is the way to go! I'm certain Disney won't be passing on this option!

I suspect that they are playing "hardball" to win some concession from the Disney Corp.

I suspect you are correct. Considering the sweetheart deal Disney negotiated for the first HK park, I don't blame the officials one bit either.

It's a great idea. Why not let Universal go in there? Think of it. All Disney cares about is the extra night in the hotel. Can you imagine the success in Paris if they had done Universal as the second gate? No risk, no investment and they gain the hotel stay and... someone might want to go there!

                Hmm.... a themepark mall....

They are probably afraid that they will lose more revenue to Universal than they would gain from the increased market size.
