  • Eventually 2 x capacity ?

    according Business Week:

Disneyland hasn't released attendance numbers, but Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, says that the park is on course to hit its first-year target of 5.6 million visitors. In early January, there was a shakeup of top management, with managing director Don Robinson leaving the company. He was replaced by Bill Ernest, a Disney veteran who had served, among other positions, as vice-president of resort operations at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

While the Hong Kong part is certainly smaller than what visitors familiar with other Disney parks might expect, Rasulo says the plan is to eventually double its capacity. And, he adds, Disney is still talking with the Chinese government about opening a second Chinese Disney park. Despite a recent report in the South China Morning Post that the Beijing government was interested in hosting a Disney park, Rasulo says that Disney is eyeing another metropolis. "Shanghai is one of the most appealing places to us," he says.

"MIDCOURSE CORRECTIONS." A Shanghai park would still be many years off, though. The focus right now is on making Disney's Hong Kong offering work. The park will be adding several new attractions this year, including the Autopia car-driving ride in Tomorrowland. Rasulo also stresses that Disney is working more closely with travel agents specializing in arranging visits from mainland Chinese. "We've shifted a little," he says, "but these are not out-of-the-ordinary midcourse corrections."

If the crowds this week are any indication, the Chinese certainly seem to be interested in hanging out with Mickey and friends. Still, as the Golden Week problems demonstrate all too well, Disney has some work to do in order to make sure its first foray into China is a success.

In fact there are plenty rooms around the developed area of HKDL (southern and western side of the park) and I guess the size of such empty space is close to the existing size of the park.

If one looks at the satellite pics, the undeveloped space is close to
twice as big as the current park.

So, that means (at least to me):
        * they can (maybe should) build to 3x the current capacity
        * they already planned to build to at least 2x

The interesting thing is that much of the space is beyond the DLRR berm.
For example, the new Autopia is actually beyond the berm.
        -----
Edit: hmm... looking at the overhead & satellite maps, there's only a bit more than 2x the
space. Not 3x. However, that doesn't preclude being able to build 3x the ride capacity. Sorry for
        the confusion on my part.

Here's the link to Satellite map of HKDL from Google Maps

I've had no luck finding similar of DLP though when I searched a while back.

I think that eventually with additions to each of the four lands they have, and the possibility of Frontierland & Mickey's Toontown, they could reach double capacity. It is a matter of parking/transportation. Hong Kong is a good location on the basis of Hong Kong being a tourist destination and place where Mainland visitors would be more apt to visit, but a bad location on space issues. I don't imagine a second park , but I could see an expanded Disneyland with new lands, in consideration to space.

They can expand Disneyland beyond the berm - no prob there.
They could do a second park - on reclaimed land in front of disneyland hk, kind of like we have it here in California.
I believe they were going to do reclaimed land in front for the second park anyway. I have a feeling that will be far from now though.

Well... Frontierland would work just as well with the railroad to the side and being outside the berm OR they could move the railroad tracks out to include Frontierland in the park or the RR could go on a new path straight through the land...

Just because Phase I is open doesn't mean they can't shift things around like they did here in CA.

                        Re: Eventually 2 x capacity ?

I have an early HKDL map on hand. It was distributed by Disney to the Hong Kong media in 2002.

                        1. The black thick line is the boundary of Phase 1
                        2. The pink area is the Storybook Theater (housing the Golden Micken Show). This map was printed in 2002 and it didn't have the theater building there. Probably it was still not confirmed at the time?
                        3. The light blue area is the space where Autopia is under construction now. According to Disney it will open in summer this year.
                        4. The red area is an open space and I guess it is the firework zone. I think HKDL cannot build large attractions there due to safety reason.
                        5. The light yeallow areas are all open spaces. We can see there is expansion room for Tomorrowland (the space next to Autopia), a few for Fantasyland (some open spaces next to the fireworks zone), and plenty for Aventureland (open spaces next to the Jungle River at bottom-left). Look at the large open space at the bottom of the park, I think it is able to accomodate at least one more land.
                        6. The dark blue area next to the Park Promenade... Could it be another Down Town Disney? How about a big Disney themed Shopping Mall? (Hong Kong people loves shopping...)

They designed the park with expansion in mind.. besid3es.. adding a few more omni-mover rides would increae capacity alot.. lol

                            build HM in adventureland..

some more FL rides, then maybe a whole new land... and you might have alot more capacity...

Don't expect a new land anytime soon. New rides in existing lands is the way they intend to expand.
