  • Shanghai to relocate residents for Disney theme park - report,Forbes,2006-8-8

SHANGHAI (XFN-ASIA) - Shanghai has started to plan for the relocation of residents to make room for a Disney theme park, the China Securities Journal reported.

The government of Chuansha town in Pudong New Area, the prospective location of the park, has held a meeting to arrange relocations for the project, the paper said, without citing sources.

The first phase of the project covers an area of 4.25 square kilometers, according to the paper.

The theme park is expected to open in 2010 to coincide with the 2010 World Expo the city will host, the report said.

The city is still awaiting final approval from the central government for a Disney theme park.

Jesus. I've said it before and I'll say it again. How bad will this look for Disney for them to be going into China on a spot of land that the Reds forced people off of? It'll look horrible. If China wants to suck at human rights then fine, Disney doesn't need to get tangled in it though.

A year ago they were talking about a 2012 opening. If they're saying 2010 now that leads me to believe that this will be a pretty small operation on opening day. Probably HKDL sized.

I think neither date is fixed in stone... it won't be fixed in "mud" until
they sign the contract (w/ WDC) and someone comes up with the money. Way
too early to guess the size of the thing.

You haven't heard an official announcement yet, have you?

Oh yeah, that's because there isn't an agreement ...

            According to this article:

"The relocation report is nonsense," said Ma Xuejie, vice director of the press office with the Pudong government.
They also confirm that the cost of the park would be around the US$3.75 billion mark.

but the US3.75 billion might also include the following infrastructure construction cost:
Officials have a detailed plan that includes the construction of a subway line, expressways and a link to Pudong international airport, the China Daily said.
so actual budget on the Theme park is definitely smaller than the quoted figure.
