  • Visitors flocking to SAR theme parks,HK Standard News, 2006-8-29

The summer holidays have cast a rosy glow on Hong Kong's two theme parks, with both reporting higher attendances.

"Our attendance is very strong this summer," said Josephine Lam Po-tung, Disneyland's director of product development, travel trade, special events and alliance marketing.

Lam did not provide figures, and declined to say if Disney would reach its first-year target of 5.6 million visitors by the September 12 anniversary of the park's opening. But she attributed the recent satisfactory visitor numbers to the success of the unlimited-visit summer pass and the rising number of mainland tourists.

"The proportion of mainland tourists has climbed to 50 percent, the highest since our the park opened," said Lam, adding that the business varies depending on school holidays.

Visitors comprise roughly a third each from Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and the mainland.

Disney sales and travel trade marketing vice president Josh D'Amaro said the park had learned from mistakes in the past year and will be more successful next year.

Answering criticism that the theme park is too small, Lam said Disney will hold five or six festive events next year to attract return visitors.
D'Amaro also said Disney has offered competitive commissions and incentive programs to reward mainland travel agents with free staff admission to the park for good sales.

Meanwhile, Ocean Park has announced record attendances for the summer.

Ocean Park chief executive Tom Mehrmann said more than a million guests had visited the park from July 1 until Monday.

They included local and overseas visitors attracted by the park's new summer attractions, including the Caribbean Summer Splash, as well as animal presentations, nature shows and exhibits, Mehrmann said.
He also announced a special promotion Monday in which anyone with a Hong Kong identity card containing the numbers three or zero will enjoy special discounts in September.
