  • Earthquake at 3.5 Richter Scale Shook Hong Kong on 14 Sept 2006

    Minor temblor shakes HK

An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale shook Hong Kong at about 7:53pm, the Hong Kong Observatory reports.

The epicentre was in the sea near Dangan Island, about 36km south-southeast of Hong Kong.

While residents from across Hong Kong reported feeling the tremor, there were no injuries or damage. The quake lasted only a few seconds.

The observatory's seismograph recorded the tremor which was estimated to be IV on the modified Mercalli scale of XII.

HK's quake history Since 1874, six tremors of Intensity V or above have been felt in Hong Kong. The strongest of these occurred in 1918, triggered by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake at Shantou, about 300 kilometres east-northeast of Hong Kong. The tremor caused only minor damages and cracks to buildings locally and its intensity was estimated to be VI to VII on the Modified Mercalli Scale.

Since 1979, 51 locally felt tremors were reported, averaging two a year. Most were of Intensity III to IV, and only one had a stronger Intensity V to VI.

The epicentres that caused most locally felt tremors lie outside Hong Kong, at Heyuan and Yangjiang in Guangdong, Beibu Wan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Since 1979, there were six locally felt tremors with epicentres in Hong Kong, at Maipo once in 1983, and near the east coast of Lantau Island twice in 1982 and three times in 1995. All were below Intensity V.
