    Hong Kong Aug tourist arrivals 2.35 mln, up 11.2 pct yr-on-yr

    HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - Tourist arrivals in Hong Kong in August rose 11.2 pct year-on-year to 2.35 mln, bringing the total number of visitors to the territory in the first eight months of the year to 16.74 mln, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) said.

    The eight-month figure represents an increase of 10.4 pct over the same period last year.

    Arrivals from mainland China in August alone reached 1.36 mln, the HKTB said.

    Visitors from Taiwan totaled 211,867, up 6.5 pct year-on-year, while those from South and Southeast Asia numbered 200,856, up 14.4 pct.

    The number of visitors from North Asia grew by 16.7 pct to 186,642.

    The hotel occupancy rate for August alone stood at 89 pct, three percentage points higher than that recorded in August last year, despite Hong Kong's hotel room supply growing only 3.4 pct during the period.
