    "
The future looks even brighter. Like the rest of you, I can't wait for Marvel's Iron Man theme area to open in 2016, followed by the Explorers Lodge hotel in 2017. And I can tell you that good progress is being made in the discussions between the Government and The Walt Disney Company on Hong Kong Disneyland's Phase 2 development.
    "
Chief Executive of HK SAR,Mr. CY Leung gave these remarks at the Hong Kong Disneyland 10th Anniversary Celebration.

Hopefully phase 2 will include an expanded Fantasy-land and additions to Adventure-land.It will be interesting and exciting to see this park continue to grow.

Phase Two means the building of the 2nd gate, not the current park expansion.

The plan is to build the 2nd gate, then after it opens, go back to expand the first gate, so as to keep fans interested in both parks.

Universal just announced the deal to build the largest Universal Stuidos theme park in Beijing. That news caused anxiety among Hong Kong's tourism sector about Hong Kong's stagnant tourist attractions development. I think this will play well into HKDL's hands when they propose a new second gate. I think they will make the proposal within the next half year.

Oh, I figured they would give HKDL some more substance before adding a 2nd gate. It will be interesting to see what the theme of the second gate will be.

"the Government is discussing the further development of the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, including the Phase 2 expansion."

CY Leung just said HK govt is still in negotiation with WDC about HKDL second phase.

The govt and WDC have talked for long enough to reveal plans, so I guess we will have to wait for John Tsang's budget speech next month. John Tsang was also the one who announced the Marvel themed land last time. He also visited WDC before so I think he is the one WDC talks to more often.

That kind of plan requires huge investment and it will face a huge obstacle at the LegCo. I also do not believe WDC will want to invest that much money.

As I said before the best strategy is to float HKITP Ltd on the HKSE to raise funds for the second gate, trying to get HK govt to inject fresh funds into the project is a dead end.

                          http://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/news/...00176_150.html

At the announcement of the Shanghai Disneyland opening date yesterday, Oriental Daily reports that the Tourism sector LegCo member Yiu Si Wing said,"If WDC has no interest in developing the second phase of HK Disneyland Resort, then the HK govt should consider developing other tourist attractions at the available site to increase HK's tourism competitiveness."

                          http://hk.apple.nextmedia.com/news/a...60114/19451057

Apple Daily has some "insider information" about the second gate. The insider claims that because when HKDL opened, it was ridiculed for its very small size, so they do not want to repeat that mistake with the second gate. They hope to make good use of the 60 hectares available so it will open at a good size.

Travel Industry Council's Michael Wu said ultimately the most important issue is funding, if that can be resolved then the whole project could move forward rather quickly. Phase 1 of second gate could have 4 themed areas, occupying 30 hectares, and could open as soon as 2018, because they have no worries about existing guests experience and the work could be expedited.

I guess the 4 themed areas are: Star Wars Land, Avatar Land, Cars Land and some form of Princess / Fairy Tale area.

The "insider" and Michael Wu's opinions seem to be very different... one say WDC wants to open big but the other said they want to open another small park. But I do believe that something new will open at the resort in 2018. HKDL has been opening something new every year since 2011.

Interesting- let's hope the second park will be something unique rather than a second gate clone. I also hope there is some form of downtown area. Hong Kong Disneyland has the potential to be a really good resort.

I'm very excited at the prospect of a 2nd gate! I hope they also continue to expand the first park, and as robbiem said above hopefully they add a Downtown Disney area too. Would be awesome if they really fleshed it out and made it into a legitimate, quality resort.

You really think they could build an entire new park in 2 years? Don't get me wrong, I think that would be awesome and would love it if they did (so long as it's a quality park an not another weak one like HKDL was), but that seems impossible.

As for possible lands, I suppose clones of recent new and forthcoming lands (the ones you mentioned) would be easy to do. Although personally I'd rather not have Avatar become a common thing among Disney parks.

I think given the quality and quantity of the competition entering the market (Shanghai Disneyland, Universal Studios Beijing, Six Flags near Shanghai, 20th Century Fox and Chimelong in Guangdong, plus rumoured theme park in Macau) in the upcoming years, it will be quite disastrous if HKDL do not open a second gate and continue first gate expansion in the near future.

2018 might be optimistic, but 2020 has to be the target. As for themed lands, Star Wars Land is definitely going to be there. The designs are done and the parks will save money if the parts are all ordered and manufactured together, along with Disneyland and WDW, buy two get one free style.

I can totally see a clone of Star Wars Land going to Kong Kong, and CarsLand too. It would would be great to see something new and unique, or even a rehash of an old idea like Discovery Bay.

I really do hope they expand HKDL, and open up a 2nd gate sometime soon. As I've said before, I'd love to see it built up into a high quality Disney resort. I hope some more news comes soon, and if something new came by 2020 that would be awesome. I wonder though, despite the competition you mentioned, if Disney would still move forward with anything new for Hong Kong after Iron Man considering all the other major projects Disney has going on right now. Not to mention, I would think they would wait a few years to see how well Shanghai performs before investing in another major project. But I guess it all comes down to how much the local government is willing to fund it.

After Shanghai Disneyland announced its opening date, the local toursim industry is crying for more new tourist attractions to be developed in Hong Kong, so the desire is certainly there. The HK govt certainly has the money to pay for the second gate, but for it to be approved by the LegCo might be the problem.

The govt already learned from the mistakes of the first park, when basically nothing of interest opened. They have now seen how Mystic Manor and Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars have attracted more people. Remember they rejected Star Tours 2 for Iron Man. (Now they can build Star Tours 2 in second gate as part of Star Wars Land.) I am quite sure Iron Man will be huge when it opens.

The govt knows to request for new and unique attractions, at the very least the attractions will have to be unique and exclusive for HKDL in Asia. I think Bob Iger and co are quite ready to agree to that. From what I heard, WDI has loads of designs in the drawer waiting to be developed into reality, so it is really not an issue at all.
