Any updates? The new shooter ride replacing Buzz is meant to open in 2018... if they don't start soon I don't think they will make the 2018 deadline.

LegCo voted to postpone until Disney came back with a better offer. The equivalent of a "no, thanks."

Disney will not pay more than their ownership % of future investment, so the only way I see this project going forward is if they do a deja vu deal just like the last major expansion: Disney foots the entire $1 billion+ expansion and their ownership stake increases by whatever percentage is equal to the investment. The optics are more palatable to the public, who hate the idea of corporate welfare, especially since HKDL, which Disney would own more of, doesn't make much profit at the moment.

Hope they make a deal soon - I mostly want to see the park get its own castle - but as of now things are stalled, so any previously announced opening dates are also going to get pushed back.

I don't think it has been tabled at the HK LegCo finance committee yet for approval.

Hong Kong Economic Times report that HKDL faces a loss for the second consecutive year. Last year the loss was not more than HK$200 million. But with tourists returning to HK, the resort believes that the worst times are over. With Star Wars takeover Tomorrowloand, Iron Man Experience and Disney Explorers Lodge opening over the year, the resort expects a turnaround of its fortunes.

The resort management believes that it has a winning ticket with Marvel and want to establish itself as a global Marvel "altar", so to speak, and attract all the Marvel fans to HKDL. Marvel will also differentiates HKDL from Shanghai and Tokyo Disneylands. The opening of the Disney Explorers Lodge, giving the resort 1,750 rooms in total, is also a chance for the resort to tap into the MICE market.

It still hopes its expansion plans will be passed by LegCo soon this year. It is still in the queue for the finance committee to pass.

For those of you who scream that Marvel does not belongs in Tomorrowland, I think it is safe for me to assume this, by the end of new phase of expansion in 2023, HKDL will NOT have a Tomorrowland anymore. It will be a Marvel Land through and through.

It was a non-binding motion. The government does not have to follow it, of course it needs to give a reason. I guess it will just say it is important for the resort and the tourism industry of HK as a whole.

But what I found interesting is that some legislators are saying they want WDC to promise that this will be the last time they come to ask for more investment. Let's see what WDC says about this. I believe after, or even in the mid of, this phase of expansion, WDC will want to start work on the second gate. Star Wars Land and Avatar Land need homes in Asia.

Not really. If it's an overlay, they just need a few months. (look at DCA's Tower).

Ah that is interesting. I think at this point it isn't worth worrying over thematic continuity given Toy Story Land, Iron Man Experience and numerous other deviations from the Disney norm. HKDL will end up being as much a fresh park as Shanghai I believe once this renovation is completed.

Is there any indication as to when the finance committee will discuss this?

                  http://hk.apple.nextmedia.com/news/a...70221/19935063

It is official, HKDL CEO Samuel Lau told Apple Daily that in 2021 and 2023 there will be new Marvel attractions opening. The 2021 Marvel attraction has to be Space Mountain makeover, since it is the only attraction left in Tomorrowland without a Marvel theme by then. So it is confirmed that Tomorrowland will transform into Marvel Land by 2021.

                  Timeline:

                  2017 Iron Man Experience
2018 Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters becomes S.H.I.E.L.D. attraction.
2021 Space Mountain becomes Marvel attraction. No idea which superhero will takeover yet.
2023 Autopia area becomes Avengers attraction.

                    HK Disneyland losses continue

Hong Kong Disneyland has recorded a net loss for a second consecutive year, but its management remains optimistic about business would improve in the coming years.

The theme park lost HK$171 million last year – about HK$20 million more than the year before. Fewer visitors came to the park last year too, dropping by 10 percent.

Its executive director Samuel Lau said the park faced headwinds from market softness last year, still it generated a revenue of HK$4.8 billion. International visitors increased.

"The future is bright. We have seen recently an uptake in improvement of our business," Lau told a news conference. "We are going to continue to roll out new products, to drive our attendance growth."

Commenting on Shanghai Disneyland, Lau said: "China is a big enough market to be able to accommodate both parks."

Hong Kong Disneyland has only been in the black for three of the 11 years it has been operating.

From the figures, $171 million loss from $4.8 billion revenue, that is a mere 3.5%. That's really not much. A slight increase in visitor numbers and the ends will meet. Given the resort is opening a new hotel, a major revenue stream, I think 2016-17 will see the resort back in profit again with ease.

Most likely the Multiverse of Doctor Strange travelling through time and space using Portals.
Can be easily adopted due to the dark ride /speed aspect.

The logo representing Doctor Strange is a round circle = similar to Space Mountain's circle design. In fact it IS Space Mountain turned upside down.

How disappointing, Space Mountain will be converted with a marvel overlay theme change?

There was a discussion in LegCo's Economic Development panel today. If you have nothing better to do then you can read about it:
