  • [Question] Is Midway Mania Going to Take Up the Whole Expansion Lot?

There's quite a bit of space there next to the Tower of Terror. Is Toy Story going to take up all of it, or will there still be room left for another attraction at some point in the future?

Right now, about little less than half of the existing parking lot behind the Broadway Theater and next to TOT has been closed off with a construction fence, so I would assume it won't take all of that space.

That's probably a good thing. I didn't think that the Midway Mania showbuilding was that large, and i suppose the rest of the lot can provide future expansion for either the American Waterfront or the Mediterranean Harbor.

just making a guess but i dont think med harbor would expand much more it takes up so much of the front of the park already. if anything american waterfront would continue to expand . if i remember correctly even lost river delta and port discovery has some room to expand.

Looking at the concept art a lot of space will be needed for not only the show building but also the outside courtyard area. The expansion also appears like it will hold perhaps more than just the show building, possibly more dining or retail spaces too. May 7th, 2009: "Cinderella" Attraction and Toy Story Mania! I love that concept art , if you look carefully it almosts looks like they would add midway games , it also looks like the street may be able to hold some of the vehicles that currently go through american waterfront

Hey I never thought about that but your right it does appear like tracks in the ground. I wasn't to keen on the idea of Toy Story Mania to begin with, but I feel thats because I had originally seen the DHS version first and unlike DCA or the upcoming TDS is doesn't really fit in with the surrounding area. The idea of Midway Games sounds cool too, and if you look closely you do see a few Rex toys hanging up, like winning prizes.

Re: Is Midway Mania Going to Take Up the Whole Expansion Lot?

^^ The idea of a Coney Island-ish section is thematically appropriate to turn-of-the-century New York, it's just the Toy Story characters themselves that don't belong in that day and age.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to see what imagineers can do with this particular theme at DisneySea level of quality. The physical additions to the areas around Paradise Bay over the past year or two certainly represent an improvement...but for me still feel rather cheap by historical Disney standards.

Carnival games are not a stretch for TDS either. They have had them in Arabian Coast before, with pretty classy prizes. So, to have a "Coney Island" area with boardwalk games would not be too out of line, since it's been done already. I agree with Tasman though, it's not the turn-of-the-century "Coney Island" theme that will be out of place, but the Toy Story characters. The facade and attraction are themed appropriately at DCA, but the characters are still very modern. That being said, so is Crush, and they managed to theme him pretty well to the S.S. Columbia.

I was truly impressed by how they handled that one. Of course, some turtles / tortoises can live more than a hundred years, so there's no reason why Crush couldn't be alive both circa 1900 and at the time of Finding Nemo. The Toy Story characters are more of a sticky proposition since some of the plastic-y ones simply wouldn't have existed that far back.

well we know woody was from the 40's-50's right according to toy story 2 , The imagineers have handled things fitting in just nice at disney sea so far no reason to doubt them yet lol.

Never seen the TDL version... but isn't DORY featured in TDS' too like the others in DCA (it is in DCA right?) and Epcot.

Doesn't make sense, but who really notices it.

Bending the theme for guest satisfaction.... like TLM at DCA.

Yes, Dori is part of the show at TDS.

Which doesn't make sense of the 1900s theme...

Besides the idea of the underwater observation window being built in 1900s when the Columbia got built, I did not see or noticed any connection between the show's storyline and the 1900s. If they tried to explain this in japanese, or in the many pictures in the queue area, then I missed it.

Wait.... have Imagineers who designed it confirmed if the American Waterfront is in present day?

                                Errrr.... confusing.

I do not know. (Hey Joe, any info please?) All I know is that this show is an inferior attraction and has no business being at the glorious TDS park. Just like that awful coaster they plopped next to Indy.

According to published literature, "American Waterfront nostalgically showcases the harbors of New York and Cape Cod at the beginning of the 20th century."

Also, The New York Historical Preservation Society re-opened "Hotel Hightower" (aka Tower of Terror) in 1912. The SS Columbia's maiden voyage was also in 1912. There are no outright references to the Great War anywhere. So I figure the time is around 1912-1914* New York.

                                    * However, there is one item near Barnacle Bills (Pier 33 - Boatman's Terrace) that blows away my theory. Sigh.....

Actually its one of the most popular attractions at both california adenture and Disney hollywood studios , it also just won a TEA award which is very prestigous . If the japanese crowd loves buzz lightyear, pooh and monsters inc, I think they will eat up midway mania. I dont doubt theming will be an issue , but i think the popularity of the attraction wont be an issue I think you will find out how superior this attraction is.

Anything Disney does in the USA always wins awards.. maybe because not so much for being great but also because there are no other viable alternatives to reward? Again..TEA will reward those who pass money under the table and I wonder how many TEA members have actually seen Disney outside the US. So those awards to me are not indication of quality, but more of trendiness.
