I am very surprised, but a nice move.

Tokyo Disney Resort to allow same-sex wedding ceremonies

    :love:Bringing the Love since January 10, 2011:love:
We were sent over there with the message that only we would defend Disney quality.. We learnt quickly that the Japanese culture speaks to a level of quality that is hard to comprehend. They were all unbelievably skilled and willing to do the right thing.

Really wonderful news! It's a bold move for OLC and I'm glad that everyone can make their wedding dreams come true in front of the castle!

It's a wonderful move of TDR. We are living in the 21st century and it's about time to allow such things.

Do other Disney resorts allow same sex marriages as well?

I know the US parks do, I'm not sure if they have something like this that is done in front of the park guests though. I think this has made more news since it includes the daily wedding event they will have in the castle starting soon and there is something they do in front of the castle. I think it will be like how they bring the newlyweds out at TDS but in front of the castle after the ceremony. I was looking for the article that goes into more detail but can't find it.

This is the website link but in Japanese:

I'm so happy with that news!! now I can celebrate my wedding there! lol...

In the Magic Kingdom it's allowed since 2007. In Paris not, but neither same sex or not, there are not weddings.

This is a nice move by OLC. Considering it's not as widely accepted in Japan, maybe this will help? It's nice that they actually went back to WDC to ask what they should do. That was a much better way than to just say "no".

The Walt Disney Company was "gay friendly" long before many other corporations, but it's really surprising to see this in Japan. I only know one "out" person in Japan, and that's out of many people in my circle of friends and acquaintances.

                      Good for OLC!

Along the lines of Fukai-san's post, here's another interesting perspective, which is quite valid and was actually my simultaneous first thought, after living in Japan for a decade:

Fake gay weddings in Tokyo Disneyland are not a fairytale come true | Nichi Hodgson | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

I'm still choosing to think of it as progress, though. At the very least, there is a way to see it as a step in the right direction, especially in a nation with so many married (to women) gay men. I often wonder why all the people who insist on not embracing out gay people don't realize that such behavior doesn't actually have much effect on how often people will choose to engage in same-sex relations...it only means they'll lie about it as much as they can, and justify it as "doing the right thing," since that's what they're taught is acceptable.^^ That's just tragic for everyone concerned, sure, but some people really are just gay, and no amount of telling them not to be or denying them the rights (and responsibilities) that come with celebrating their love out in the open is ever gonna change that. Not really.
