  • [Pictures] Toy Story Mania - Soft Opening Pics and Impressions (July 3rd)

On our recent trip to Japan...went to TDS on July 3rd and was fortunate to take a few spins on TSM during the day and evening. Wasn't planning on filming videos (like I normally do) during our trip but snapped as many pics as I could and before the CMs started asking me NOT to take photos while in the interior.

Descriptions are based upon jet lagged memory so I apologize in advance (to the regulars) if my assumptions or descriptions are slightly off..

    Entrance to area.
Trolley Park is very well detailed but the Guest accessible footprint is small in comparison to other areas. One way in and out of the area.

Round seating planter in the center of area. To the left... a cut out photo op with Hamm and Bullseye. (not pictured)

Slinky Dog souvenier cart (not opened at the time)

Animatronic Mr. Potatohead's home. (Closed during soft opening) Though a CM tried to fire him up but he started moving without audio. Curtains quickly closed.

Carnival Corral (Roped off during soft opening)
Three interactive items appear ready for guest enjoyment.

Blazin' Backaroo (Run in place game)

    Manic Mirrors

    Woody's Wonder Wagon

    Outside queue area.

    Signs in exterior queue

    Fastpass

    Entrance

Near loading area... there is a bookshelf with book and game boxes stacked. This PRESTO book caught my eye as I loved this short but I noticed the library card detail added. Didn't know Andy's last name was Davis? (Sorry for blurry pic) At this point the CM asked me to tuck my camera away.

    Exit path.

Detail of queue is impressive, ground looks like a game board as well.
Loading area looks like Andy's room with large door entrance, bed, walls, window etc. When you vehicle leaves loading area it appears you are going under Andy's bed.

Ride vehicles, lap bar, cannon, screens and doors appear the same as Anaheim and Florida variants.
I played through Barn eggs, Dinosaur darts, Army Men plates and Alien ring scenes.

The ride queue and the level of detail impressed me the most. The level of detail placed on the story is what impressed me with most all of the newer attractions at both parks in Tokyo. (More in my trip report later)

The queue is excellent. However, I'm not feeling the carnival feel of the area. While executed nicely, it reminds me of DCA 1.0, but with Toy Story characters. The Woody with the gaping mouth is off-putting.

This looks very impressive. I love what they've done with the area. So much better than DCA's queue.

It took DisneySEA one ride to achive what HKDL and WDS had to dedicate an entire land to.

The area does look impressive. But to me it's too one tone. I actually like the exterior and surrounding area of DCA's much more. The queue is impressive. But a lot of it looks too 2D. Eh it's just a queue I can live with DCA's. Not that big a deal for me. Overall, I'd say it's very well executed but I wouldn't say it's like the best they could do.

So is it a cultural thing that "Midway" isn't mentioned at all, or did marketing finally win?

Toy Story Mania! and "Carnival Games" all the way, no Midway anywhere!

I just don't see what makes this queue so amazing. It's definitely an improvement to the version in DHS it most resembles in the inside, but this is just so underwhelming for a park as great as DisneySea. Color me extremely unimpressed. The loading area for DCA is marginally better. Less is better sometimes.

The outside looks great but why did they have to theme the interior to the standard Andy's bedroom theme? It's a total theming clash. It would've been amazing to see this Disneysea ride combine the Trolley Park theming with Toy Story characters the whole way through, especially considering what they did with the outside.

It's really not just a queue. For me at least, and the Japanese friends I was with, it really felt like Toyville Trolley Park is a separate place within American Waterfront, like Cape Cod. There really is the feeling like you're going to an amusement park, and - for me - that feeling made the Waterfront seem that much more real. I really expected to find it jarring, but I absolutely love it in execution.

I agree about the interiors, though. I'd have loved to see the Toyville Trolley Park taken all the way to the interior queue and even the visual design of the games. It's kind of a shame that didn't happen because the toy illusion didn't really work for me. It seems more like everything is big than that I'm small. Not sure how to overcome that. In all the Ports of DisneySEA, I have had moments that I truly felt transported. I felt the same way at the entrance and exteriors of Toyville Trolley Park, though not so much inside. That said, I enjoyed the actual attraction FAR more than I expected to. I recommend it, but I wouldn't wait more than 90 minutes; it's short and the exterior is as much fun as the attraction itself.
